Remember that "it gets better campaign?" No, it doesn't. We need a video campaign urging people to stand up for their rights because it does not "get better" without voices being heard and action being taken, and even then, it's still so difficult and unrewarding and actually dangerous that I break down in tears just thinking about what queer kids are going through. At least when I was a kid, it was all so closeted that I didn't even know enough to be ashamed until I was legally an adult. Now, you have the Internet giving you hope on one hand and taking it away on the other. Adults going after children to further an agenda without a true care in the world for how it hurts them because, as far as they see it, it is for their own good. "It gets better." Look at Russia, Uganda, and now the Trump administration (I think Trump gives no fucks, but everybody else has an agenda and it includes making us not exist). That's the thing. Tennessee is wanting to say kids have to go to the bathroom of the gender on their birth certificate. At the same time that Tennessee as explicit exclusions from changing gender on birth certificates for anything that has to do with being transgender. They want us to not exist. I am not ashamed, but I am terrified.

Don't minimize that message just because you aren't, or are no longer, its target market. Not that urging action isn't just as vital, of course.

Gosh I love the new improved post-Obama Fourth Circuit. I had the privilege of watching oral arguments there when one of the last big gay marriage cases went through a few years ago, and it was quite pleasant listening to an older, Clinton-appointed black judge absolutely ream the attorneys arguing for the ban by echoing all the ways they sounded just like people trying to keep interracial marriage illegal.

Anyone who ignores this kind of widespread and systematic, I hate to say abuse, say instead persecution and torture, of a vulnerable minority simply because of some misguided both sides reasoning, or worse, simply because they don't think it's politically convenient to care, is thoroughly betraying their principles and those on whose behalf they are supposedly organizing.

It also makes no loving sense. The Chechen Republic has a lot of differences with Russia, there were the whole wars and stuff, and all the news articles are talking about Chechnya rounding up gay men, not Russia. So even if you wanted to white knight Putin due to dumb badly formed tankie thought and excuse the homophobia in the rest of the Federation with whataboutism you could still say something like "Russia is not killing gay men, the Chechens are."

i honestly wonder how many of the people in leftist circles saying "russiaphobia" in response to democratic inquiries about trump's russian ties are kremlin plants trying to dismantle any grassroots attempts at organizing by making it seem "problematic" or something. like don't get me wrong "we gotta bomb this country to protect the citizens of that country" is a tried and true banner to go to war on but for real letting that get in the way of actually calling attention to what is most likely a real thing that is happening (because this is a country run by a man who made people who attended a party he lost his watch at come back to insure they hadn't stolen it, which was like 2,000 people and included children) is preeeetty hosed up i see some leftists doing that with assad too and it's like bro you don't gotta pretend assad isn't a piece of poo poo to say that bombing a country to protect that country is stupid as gently caress

For what it's worth, I've also dealt with tankies from communist countries (or I suppose you could term them "true believers" if you prefer) -- I had a Cuban friend who had studied in the USSR, and even though he lived in Canada for quite a time he was still a very big fan of communism, Stalinism and everything else. He eventually left to work in Venezuela, presumably on Chavez's socialist paradise. I have no idea what he's doing now (I haven't heard from him since Chavez died). Funny story: apparently if you were trying to reach him in Cuba, because three people named Ivan used his phone line, you were to ask for "Crazy Ivan" to reach him. He came by that nickname honestly...

SO, HOW ABOUT THAT CHECHNYA SITUATION NOT BEING REAL. http://www.pinknews.co.uk/2017/04/21/chechnyas-president-i-will-eliminate-the-gay-community-by-the-start-of-ramadan/ "The president of Chechnya has issued a chilling warning to gay men in the region. Sources have said that he wants the [LGBT] community eliminated by the start of Ramadan." "Mr Duncan revealed that he spoke directly to his counterpart, Russia’s deputy foreign secretary Vladimir Titov, to challenge the Russian Federation on human rights abuses against LGBT people. British Embassy representatives have also spoken directly to the Russian government to raise the issue. However a spokesperson for Vladimir Putin has said the Russian president has no reason to believe the attacks are genuine. Dmitry Peskov, Putin’s Press Secretary, claimed that investigators have found no evidence to support reports of the purge, which originated in respected newspaper Novaya Gazeta, according to Associated Press." "This week, Putin had a meeting with Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, who told the Russian president not to believe the “provocative” articles. He also accused international organisations of conducting a “massive information attack using the most unworthy methods, reality is distorted, attempts are being made to blacken our society, lifestyle, traditions and customs.” A spokesperson for Chechnya’s leader Ramzan Kadyrov has previously denied there are any gay people to purge, insisting that “you can’t detain and harass someone who doesn’t exist in the republic”." But you know, false flag, russophobia, whatever other bullshit.
