Snorkels are pretty common on vehicles with 4WD in Australia but it turns out those fireys hosed up when they misjudged the height of a signpost which made them think the water was much shallower than it turned out to be. They got into a bit of poo poo over that and the driver was banned from driving in future.

Hell if know, I don't know the gear standards for deploying soldiers in the US. When I saw them coming out all I could think of was "Oh poo poo, I hope those guys in the back aren't geared up and drown because the driver is an idiot"

For the US military, it's because senior leaders are notoriously out of touch with what training requires and want to be seen as good leaders by making their people do things the hard way, especially when it comes to combat LARPing "training like you fight", doubly so for units that typically do not do the fighting.

In the field you call get away with ignoring that bullshit once you're outta sight, and in the interest of actual troop safety, most team leaders that aren't broken will disregard stupid directives.

I've been paying more attention to those material codes because of this thread and it's always something boring like UN 1993.

You can't spit without hitting a molten sulfur truck if you're anywhere near oil/chemical industry.

I regularly pass trucks filled with liquid bitumen which are only bad for the smell of the kerosene burner and the sulphur smell that goes with it. Most other trucks are either petrol, sulphuric acid or fly ash from the power plants that they put into concrete

At work we have been storing yogurt labeled "must be refrigerated between 33-38°F" in a network closet which facilities has set to 57°F and calls it "cold enough." The current batch has been in there 48 hours, a new record. This is stuff they put in the free snack/drink fridge when there is room.
