You could try giving them TB, or maybe polio. This probably won't actually change their mind at all, but on the plus side if they die from a terrible disease that can be prevented through a simple vaccine, it might motivate people in their social circle to change their mind.

I'm only barely joking, the only thing that seems to effectively change these people's minds is when they gently caress it all up and get to see what bouts of measles or some poo poo sweeping a population looks like.

Googled out of curiosity, polio viruses are biosafety level two - so "potentially dangerous, be careful" but not the extravagant safety measures of 3 or the "wear a full biohazard suit and go through a decontamination chamber at the end of your workday" of 4.

Makes sense.

Yeah hygiene is obviously a bullshit reason

The actual reason is that a lot more people became practitioners of sex magic and became impervious to disease. Sex magic is taboo in the third world so they still have measles and polio there

90% of the time antivaxers will show graphs of mortality rather than number of cases to try to show that vaccines don't work and these diseases would have gone away regardless. The number of people killed by polio and smallpox were on the decline before the vaccines were introduced - not because people were getting the diseases less, but because we got better at helping people not die when they got them.

it's impossible to get through to an antivaxxer. i made the mistake of engaging someone from high school on facebook about it and it was obvious she and her friends would just bury you in bullshit and even if you responded to all their points they'd just dismiss it as establishment propaganda or something. it was obvious from their talking points that they were used to responding to people who were fairly ignorant (bringing up the vaccine court was a big one) and not someone who knew how to respond to all their talking points. the denmark study alone debunks everything they believe but linking that didn't sway them one bit. there's all sorts of studies "proving" their point but they don't seem to realize that the website they were using doesn't have true peer review.

Naturopathic 'doctor's kids - including a baby - get whooping cough. Possible complications include broken ribs, aneurysms and death. Antibiotics clear it up within about ten days.

quote:

Madilyn had been coughing for 60+ days. We hadn’t slept longer than 2 hours in months. UGGGGGH. Sleep, it’s for the select few parents who probably drug their kids or lock them in their rooms. That is not us. We read and cuddle to sleep every night. OH, how I just wanted to sleep for six hours straight for just one night, it would have been miraculous. The term “walking dead” described the new me. It was during this time, the first week in December that my husband sat me down, looked me in the eyes and said, “I trust you, but I am scared that one of our kids is going to die. You know it is just a matter of time before Millie develops whatever it is that Madilyn and Lucien have. It’s going to be bad, Heather. I think we need to go to the hospital. What are you thinking?”

Part of me felt blind-sided and hurt, unsupported and ready to blow…that was the exhausted me. I took a deep breath and looked away, thinking before I spoke. I knew he had always been and still is the logical one. I react emotionally, instinctively, often times before my mind has fully connected with my words. My truth just seems to spill easily from my mouth, a lot of times without the sweetness of being sugar-coated… just bluntness, pure honesty. However, I have learned that my truth does not belong to all of humanity. Each person is entitled to their beliefs and logic or training.
[...]
It took a good 120-150 days from the start of the coughing for each of them to eliminate the bronchial damage and lung weakness caused by the bacterial infection, Pertussis. We spent hundreds of dollars on natural health products and consultations with various Naturopathic Professionals. It was a living HELL. Every day. It had an intense effect on my marriage and relationship with my husband. It caused me to question everything I knew about Natural Health.
[...]
I called my mentor and the founder of my Naturopathy school to gain yet another naturopathic perspective. She had nothing but good things to say. She once again boosted my morale. It was all I needed to hold strong over the holiday season.

I just want you to ask yourself… How did people make it through for thousands of years? How did they get through the Spanish Influenza, the Black Plague, fevers and other ailments?

People, your ancestors have used natural remedies since the dawn of time to heal all things. Pharmaceutical creations have only been around for about 150 years. Most prescriptions have spent somewhere around 10 years from start to finish, including testing phases, before being allowed on the market to be used in experimentation on your family. We have no idea what the long term effects are going to be for all of these quick fix medications on our kids.

I can't wait until scientists find out the "explosion" of autism in specifically the US is due to something taken from the mothers while pregnant. Psychotropic meds that entered the fetus's bloodstream? whatever other commonly used drugs that have been popularized since the 90s? perhaps something else

yeah go ahead and say I'm dreaming this up, i don't blame you. I'm only saying this because I personally see vaccines as the last thing that can cause such a dramatic brain rewiring at a post-birth age that anti-vaxxers claim affects their kids

High functioning autism is also a diagnosis du jour right now to explain a kid's bad behavior, much like ADHD before it. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the illness is a fake (nor is ADHD), but sometimes parents feel helpless and want a diagnosis to help explain why their kid is acting a certain way.

The rise in rates of autism correlates very closely with an equally strong decline in the rate of diagnosis for retardation and other more general diagnoses. There was always a ton of autism and only in the last 10-15 years have people begun to understand it well enough to properly identify it.

Wouldn't call it "better understanding". More that they took a bunch of unrelated and only vaguely related things that used to be tracked separate, then declared all that stuff would now be called "autism spectrum". There happened to be at the same time more people bothering to take their kids to be checked out instead of just muddling through as before, but the "autism" rate jumping is entirely due to the fact that most people getting diagnosed on the "autism spectrum" now flat out did not qualify as having "autism" if you use the rules in place in say, 1987.

In short, an autism diagnosis in the 80s in before almost always required very severe symptoms, with most of the people getting diagnosed being those who could barely speak if at all, and other such things.
