I'm not great at fighting, and I play with a gamepad, but today I opened up that Advanced Combat Tutorial since it's come up a couple times lately. Beat it on my first try, but just barely (with a Swiss cheese hull and malfunctioning lasers by the end).

My take as someone who's been playing (99% PvE) Elite for a while: the encounter is quite hard, and designed to be won only if you're using all the resources at your disposal. You'll need to very actively manage your power, drop chaff whenever you start taking fire, utilize your vertical and lateral thrusters (and possibly FA Off) to dance around those dumbfire missiles, and use your lasers and missiles effectively.

Most importantly, IMO, you'll need to take advantage of your speed. With four pips to ENG, you can outpace the Eagles if you keep hammering your booster. This was my main strategy; if you can survive long enough to get out of range of their lasers, you can catch your breath and let your shield recharge to full. I did this in between every kill. The hardest part (obviously) is when Eagles #2 and #3 are both firing at you. But if you can zip into the fray with full shields, blow one of them away (using excessive missiles if you have to), then zip back out again, you'll be able to recharge your shields yet again. The last, lone Eagle should be a cakewalk; a System Authority will even jump in to help you out.

Power-wise, I tried to keep pips at 4/0/2 while fighting (those Eagles are poo poo at maneuvering; stay in your blue speed thresholds and you shouldn't need the extra maneuverability). Then 2/4/0 when it's time to make a beeline out of there. Two pips to shields isn't ideal when the lasers are going up your butthole, but you'll need every bit of speed you can squeeze out of your engines for a quick getaway. Even if your shields go down while scrambling for distance, you'll have given yourself the time needed for them to come back online.

I already said it, but using your vertical/lateral thrusters to dodge is pretty important while making your get-aways. Dumbfire missiles were whiffing by me the whole time, and if one of them had connected, I'm sure I wouldn't have survived the encounter.

Good luck gumshoes! o7

Since in most video games the PC is an ubermensch capable of mowing down NPC's by the dozens I had to learn the hard way that if a group of pirates ambushes you demanding you drop some cargo for them you should treat it like being mugged IRL and just give them what they want because odds are if you resist they will just murder you.

On the other hand, it's amusing to be flying around in my kitted out Python, get interdicted, and have the other dude just go 'Oh hell no' on comms when his board lights up like a Christmas tree.

Welp, 3 hours of grinding for materials, a lost Python while ganking type-9s in a RES zone, and 12 class-5 FSD rerolls later, and...

And that's with shields, a heatsink, and vehicle hanger/both types of scanner. If I stripped the heatsinks, hanger and shields I can get 60.24/55.42, and without the scanners it's 60.89/55.97.

If you want to save some resources with rerolling you can simply go into outfitting and remove the modification.

Or just store it if it's really good, but that will drop you down to a stock module.

You should go there anyway because it's totally awesome, nevermind the money or the mission.

That situation'll probably make the trip a bit tedious though.

NOPE

You can get sightseeing missions that pay 5-12 million and that consist of 3-4 legs of maybe 200LY distance each. You'll get those done to the equivalent reward in about 5% of the time that a journey to the centre of the galaxy will take, and that's if you had a decent ship.

It's doable just will take a long time. Doing some bad napkin maths, it'll take you around 23 jumps to cover 500ly. That might take an hour tops with scoops.

So that's roughly 1500 or so jumps to get there (assuming it's 25,000ly away).

People have said you can make the trip to Sag A in eight hours of continuous jumping.

Something that I really wish they'd add is a comparison that shows you the before and after on your jump range when engineering FSDs, because sometimes it's hard to judge the impact of a minor optimal mass boost vs large mass gain.

Of course, anyone who was around for when they dropped powerplay knows I really should have just kept going.

Most stations spawn a lot of the long range missions, especially if you have high reputation with the faction. The shortest ones go about a 1000 lightyears, so they can be much more doable without a fully engineered Asp.

This.

High faction reputation (specifically the minor factions on the station you're docked at) are key to getting the juicy missions.

It's worth having a "home base" you look for good missions just for that reason because it can take a while to build up faction rep in Space System Wherever.

If I take all the junk off my anaconda it does very near to 70ly. The key is lightweight sensors, mine are 12 tons instead of 64 tons. I also got a really good FSD roll. You can probably get better if you got the increased max fuel mod too. My optimal mass modifier went off the chart and the mass of the FSD didn't go out of control.

Edit: If you got absolutely magical rolls this would be possible. https://eddp.co/u/WQQCncPR

It's great in ships with limited internals that you would like to keep a bigger slot open for cargo or something else. I have a modified prismatic on my cutter that's only a size 5, giving me more cargo than most ships in the game.

It's a pretty neat trick. Put a size 5 prismatic on a ship that can fit it, like a Vulture and take it to any engineer that can do shield upgrades. Just keep trying out any upgrades until you get a secondary modifier for hull mass. You need a really good upgrade on it, at least 9%. This will take a lot of rolls, maybe a hundred or more, so you want to just spam level one modifications. After that, you can switch the shields over to your Cutter. The next step is to purchase 760 tons of imperial slaves.

I'm unsure what would happen if you removed the engineered modification after the shields are installed. I haven't tried it yet.

The shields are still strong enough to let me crash full speed into planetary bases for quick smuggling.
