gently caress, man. I sincerely hope F4W are the most wrong they will ever be about anything re: Shibata. As someone not especially familiar with NJPW before basically WK10, Shibata was probably my favorite Japanese wrestler... Legitimately depressing news. I was holding out hope that they went to insane lengths to work this whole thing, but maaaaan this sucks!!

This would be a pretty insane work. Rewatched the match on Daryl Surat's channel and Shibata was clearly dragging his right leg and his right arm was limp and dangling after the match

loving tragic if true. Seeing Shibata win his first ever singles championship at WK10 was an amazing thing, even from the nosebleed section I could tell he was something really special. There aren't a lot of guys who could make plain black trunks and "The Wrestler," their gimmick, but the way he carried himself made him seem like a loving John Wick-esque hero assassin come to life. I'll keep hoping this is a work, and if its not I'll hope that he's retiring young, healthy, wealthy and satisfied that his last match is the best match of his career and he ended it on a note that will probably end up borderline mythical in years to come.

It's a shame that one of my favorite wrestlers was also a self-destructive idiot. The headbutt got him some buzz, but he was already over and putting on great matches before it. If you take the headbutt away, nothing about Shibata's career changes, except that he doesn't break his own brain for the sake of one spot. Goodnight my sweet, handsome prince.
