Even if we could say have perfect DNA replication without loss of telomeres, every day on earth is a day your aorta might dissect, or you might have a stroke, or a heart attack, or one of those cells turns into cancer. No one really dies of "old age", you just eventually roll a catastrophic die one day after a life time of decent rolls. That's not even counting car wrecks or what not.

alnilam posted:Agreed about public funding but there is a big difference between "paying people to pursue something," i.e. maybe a few dozen researchers which yes has happened plenty of times, vs causing "an entire field" to abandon more pressing problems and focus on a pet issue, which has not, thanks in part to our history of publicly funded medical research This is a problem with breast cancer right now. There are other, more lethal, more common, cancers that need to be addressed. But so much attention and money is around breast cancer now that it sucks people towards it. It's turned into too much of a marketing and social juggernaut largely because of some very rich female boosters of it. This stuff has happened. It's not like it happens all the time. But a person rich enough to create a "social awareness campaign" around their pet issue or just loving buy out the hospital (or poo poo donations too a university) can totally cause a mess. With regards to the original point, Peter Theil totally has enough money to fund a lot of vampire research, buy a vampire hospital, launch a vamprisim awareness campaign, and engage in vampirism. That it's asinine won't hurt. For every "breast cancer awareness" where massive harm is done by driving money and attention to only one thing at the expense of others but there is actual science and research to do, there's also some "vaccines gave my kids austism" nonsense out there which is total bullshit and harmful on every level and forces the medical and scientific community to waste time and money combating lunatics with a public platform. But the root problem is the same, rich fuckers.

ohhh yeah that would be a good idea get a kickstarter running called "calling out to whoever has the piss tape" - is there a "chip in" feature where it doesn't have a target and just accumulates? It would be loving crazy to watch people put their money into it. Of course this had to be controlled by a mediator but still, imagine the values it would reach if you could donate internationally. gently caress, now I want this.

That's not even counting car wrecks or what not. age-related research doesn't just focus on telomeres, there are 7 known factors in the disease we generally call aging and research on the subject demands that all 7 are addressed. death-resistant cells, which result in cancerous growths, are actually one of the 7 causes. worth noting that a new functional cause of aging hasn't been discovered since 1982 when up until that point causes were being discovered roughly every 5-7 years, so there's reason to believe we have at least a clear picture of the problem set at this point.

The "thirty years of progress" poo poo is dumb too, everything we have now that we didn't widely have in 1980 was already in active development before then. The progress of the last thirty years has been outsourcing that poo poo to China so analog cell phones no longer cost $1500 and memory costs aren't the primary limit to computer technology.
