Given the sheer number of ANZSCO codes it's highly likely that almost all of the removed occupations fall under a slightly differently-worded occupation that is still allowed. Almost like the goal of the project is to be seen to do something while not actually doing anything.

I would blow Dane Cook posted:You know when you have a tab open and you don't remember how it got there? Such a weird list. There is a focus on journalism/media/arts, a lot of movie production jobs, for example. Media producers who produce only video? No TV presenters, how often do we import those? Diver? that's a bloody weird choice. It's a very difficult profession to find talent in, anywhere in the world. No metallurgists or Other Sports Officials. Not doctors but dental staff. No sculptors, shearers or singers. And definitely NO bloody deer or goat farmers. gently caress off, we're alpacas.

Why the gently caress do we need to import accountants and IT workers? Surely we can train enough of those through the university system. Rather than having a list of approved job descriptions it'd probably be easier to just slap a $20k fee on any company looking at bringing in a 457. That way if it's something really important they can get someone regardless of the job but it might discourage recruiting a bunch of Cambodian electricians to work in the mines or whatever, plus $20k is probably relatively small compared to what you'd be paying someone with skills genuinely impossible to find in Australia. If we were really clever we could even adjust the fee based on the current unemployment/underemployment rate

gay picnic defence posted:Why the gently caress do we need to import accountants and IT workers? Surely we can train enough of those through the university system. It's about suppressing wages for people who are here not about finding people to fill a gap. See also that map that shows the number of 457 workers per postcode strongly correlating with the unemployment rate.

This is 100% confirmation bias, but if I get a student who doesn't even know how to log in to a computer, much less how to convert a document to PDF and submit it to turnitin, they're either doing religious studies or a Masters in Creative Writing. I'm not complaining. They keep me in a job.
