How's the game right now? Is it a good time to jump back in? Or is it still a terrible mess? I was level 50 before I stopped but they've raised the level cap to 60 right?

It's always a terrible mess. Also they're making a huge balance change next week when they launch the season of PVP, and no one's really quite sure how things will shake out after that. My guess is that everyone will get nerfed, which will end up making Sci and Eng even worse choices than before. PVP will remain unbalanced and most people still won't play it.

Yeah looking at it from a bubble there's a lot of fixes to things that honestly kind of needed fixing (like FAW being the only weapon skill you ever need, etc) but it doesn't actually solve the deeper core issues of the class design (tacs are still the best class since all that really matters is damage) and they're making pretty sweeping changes without really considering how it would interact with the encounter design.

But, game's easy, it'll still be just as playable as it is now (ie, barely), and PVP will still suck. :effort:

On the other hand, the grind from 50 to 60 is about to become a lot easier since they're removing the need for you to mash your face against Delta patrols between missions.

To be honest, it'd cause so much grump, but I'd eleminate classes having an effect on space and move all unique class stuff to ships: escort as tac, cruiser as eng, sci as sci. Make classes your ground class and ship your space class, as part of seperating ground and space builds entirely. The rebalance ship-class from there.

Make your captain count as a free boff slot available on all ships, with four selectable powers from your class.

Maxing out a specialization lets you use those powers in the captain's chair for any ship.

There now classes are different but in practice everyone experienced will have an intel/temporal/pilot/whatever mashup on their captain so the difference between eng/tac/sci powers is practically nil.

I see a lot of people getting salty about the "competitive" content and pvp in general. I don't think I've ever before seen people threaten to boycott a new season's content before it was released. People weren't even mad about DR until after it launched, even though tribble testers warned them about all the problems. Then again, maybe that just means Cryptic is on the right track.

I'm more inclined to give normal PvP a try than the new queues - they look too much like busywork.

Nah, you're playing it the right way.

That said, maybe try out the latest episode. Its legit the best thing they've done in years.

The best way to play STO is casual as hell and not give a poo poo about how fast you progress in anything.

It's lowest common denominator gets a gold participation star so as long as you turn up and vaguely pay attention you'll get through content. Yes bigger numbers are better but that will happen organically anyway so don't stress it.

So we've learned in the thread that some pubbies morally rank STO encounters by differentiating between: mission replays (it's morally OK to kill bad guys because it's CANON that all replays are holodeck simulations); new missions (only OK to kill bad NPCs if they fire first); and forums-suggested missions/story arcs (NOT OK to even talk about a ruined Bajor because that's for fascist genocide apologists).

New favorite pubbie.

I think that a reliance on firearms is a betrayal of Roddenberry's vision, and so I prefer to strike a conciliatory tone and negotiate a mutually agreeable end to hostilities.

I don't know where they're playing, but I'm on the Holodeck server, so I'd say that anything goes given that logic.

If the day/night cycle is gone due to the lighting update, they just need to update lighting parameters for the map to bring back the day/night cycle for the Bajor map.

On some missions the game tells me that my undine arm cannon that makes the ground erupt in magic space lava is now set to stun.

I guess the lava changes to "relaxing lukewarm" rather than "carbonized bone on touch" or something. Space magic!
