Recently they put one of those RFID thingies at the gates to my community so you need to scan the little fob to get in. You need to go to the management office to get one and apparently I'm the only person here who's done it since pretty much every else just stands there shouting until on of the baoan comes and lets them in. Just now a woman was standing right up against the reader so I couldn't get to it, I said duibuqi and she did the jaw drop and stare omfg it's a laowai thing and wouldn't move so I picked here up and moved her. She just stood there muttering laowai to herself.

if you want an ice coffee just get a regular coffee and a cup of ice. they cost the same but you can almost get two full iced coffees out of your hot coffee because the ice takes up so much space. good tip if you're chilling in Starbucks for a summer afternoon getting work done or reading or w/e.

Don't do this on a date

You can also just kill yourself and save a lot of money. You don't even need any coffee for that.

Ideally an iced coffee is made from coffee that's already been chilled before you add ice, otherwise you just water it down too much with the hot coffee. If the coffee is cold you can order it with no ice so it's cold but you get a lot of undiluted coffee.

You realize you can simply get a refill of a tall ice coffee for fifty cents, right? Provided you have a receipt or have been sitting in front of the baristas the entire time. Also do tip something if you do this otherwise you look like a loving cheapska

Cool Party
the talk about cheap coffee reminded me of the best part of the Chi Mak espionage case

quote:

Sitting around the house—secret audio recordings would later show—the two often talked about Chinese politics, remarking that Mao, like Stalin, was misunderstood by history. The influence of Maoist ideology was, perhaps, evident in the Maks’ extreme frugality: they ate their meals off of newspapers, which they would roll up and toss in the garbage. Every Saturday morning, after a game of tennis, they drove to a gas station and washed their car using the mops and towels there. From the gas station, the Maks drove to a hardware store and disappeared into the lumber section for ten minutes, never buying anything. For weeks, the agents following them wondered if the Maks were making a dead drop, but it turned out that the lumber section offered free coffee at that hour.

Tipping is cool when it's not intended to be part of your actual earnings. I hate the way tipping in restaurants works in the US, but I don't mind tipping a hairdresser or a cabdriver (unless they have a smelly cab).

My dad is the kind of foreigner who ruins it for everyone. If he asks the security guard to call a cab to the door rather than walking out to the street to get one, he'll tip the guard. And then I forever look cheap afterwards when I call for a taxi and don't tip. And he always rounds way the gently caress up when paying his fare even if the service was awful and the car falling apart.

I was discussing this with another American the other day, and we both kinda get the shakes if we try to leave a place without tipping, and we've both been living overseas for at least 11 years. It's just such a hosed up ingrained part of the culture, and doubly so if you've ever worked in food service yourself.

Yeah, I almost forgot when I went back to the US last summer (hadn't been back for three years) and I had like a cold sweat of shame prickling all over my body. I had to run back inside, find the poor server, and apologize profusely. Luckily she was understanding and laughed, but I felt like a loving dick.
