When a new edition of an RPG is going to come out, the company making it announces it a year in advance and solicits feedback on the rules. They don't stop selling the old edition but customers know the new edition is coming that will make all the old stuff obsolete. And the old stuff generally goes on discount the last month or two before the new one comes out, becuase they need to clear out the soon-to-be-obsolete inventory. Everyone playing 40k knew a new edition was coming out, of course: but new editions of 40k generally don't invalidate all the books and supplements from the previous edition right away. So yes, this is still lovely behavior.

GW's new game rules invalidate stuff they were selling at full price weeks ago. The people who paid full price for those products were essentially lied to. It's a lie of ommission. GW could have announced 6 months ago that their next edition of 40k would not be backwards compatible with existing rulebooks. They had to have known by then. By not announcing it, and continuing to make and sell products for an edition about to be obsoleted, they are decieving their customers for profit. Car companies and phone companies are not comparable. They are not deceiving their customers to sell products at full price knowing that those products' utility will soon be seriously undercut by their next product which they have been developing for a year in secret.

Old obsolete rules systems have exactly the same value as brand new ones. The player base for an old game definitely continues to all keep playing that game even after a new edition comes out. Like, the community at large or whatever, and the social expectations certainly seems to be in my experience that the community at large will play with the latest releases. So if such a recent book's rules are no longer valid for what I'm going to (maybe unfairly) call "standard play" doesn't that rub you just a little bit the wrong way? Note I still think it's a cool thing to offer refunds.

It uses little cardboard dials to lock in maneuvers, but other than that it's not too bad to proxy for. I'm sure there will be mdf bases for it before long, and then you can slot basically whatever into it. Roommate and I made some cardboard proxy materials while we wait on shipping for second core box, and it's lovely and cumbersome but manageable. I know a guy that plans to use his LotR Elves as the elf army when it's released.
