"As former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich recently said, 'Governing by anecdote is not governing. It's demagoguery.' And it's been disappointing and frustrating to witness opponents to tenant protections…resort to playing on the public's emotions and prejudices, rather than basing their positions on facts."

The case against Ed Murray is gonna be weird:quote:On April 11, Bob Sulkin, Murray’s attorney, released a doctor’s report the defense team says disproves a claim in D.H.’s civil lawsuit that said the mayor had a “unique mole on his scrotum” at the time of the alleged assaults. The report says Murray has no moles, freckles, or other marks or bumps on his genitals and no signs of such marks or bumps being removed. “This is the heart of the case. This is what they were pushing at. What does he have left?” Sulkin said, insinuating that D.H.’s lawsuit should be dead on arrival.

Washington democrats are doing the job of the Washington republicans by reducing the cost of licensing your car to try to kill ST3. http://app.leg.wa.gov/billsummary?BillNumber=2201&Year=2017 They claim that republicans were going to pass worse, so they had to pass this to keep the republican bill from passing. Republicans could threaten to cut off your head, democrats would instead cut off both your arms and act like they were doing you a huge favor.

This seems like the kind of thing that is going to cause the Democrats to lose ground to Socialist alternatives. The good news is that this will push the Dems nationally left and will be more effective if we just keep playing by PNW rules and don't let the national democrats decide our behavior and policy.

Which, if you think about it, maybe isn't that great. That, plus the recent discovery of the truth behind her story, seems to indicate to me that maybe she's not as left as we'd all like her to be. And you don't have to be very far to the left to hate landlords. As for the neutral things she's done, she's kicked out the bureau directors for the Office of Neighborhood Involvement and Development Services. We'll see how those play out.

I'm not surprised that someone who grew up privileged af (Wheeler) would buy into respectability politics, but I've observed Commissioner Eudaly interact with marginalized groups in a more understanding way, so it was a big let-down. The "truth" behind her story is really dumb and doesn't even change the point of her anecdote. And a reminder that the WW journo who dug up the dirt is the same one who wrote the sympathetic puff piece on noted sexual predator Hart Noecker. The concept sounds really silly, but it's pretty informative. There's a great discussion about open data and bias/hate crime early on for instance. I know it's not going to address the huge issues by itself, but when I think about creative community policing, this fits well within that portfolio. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6tQtVw3WTk

anthonypants posted:And then the landlords sued, and then the city moved the case to federal court, and the federal court said it had nothing to do with federal law and moved it back down to a local court. This is good! This is what she said she'd do. It's nice. We'll see if it the court holds it up. There's also a no-cause eviction ban bill which passed the state House last week and which might also lift a ban on rent control, but I don't think Chloe Eudaly has a lot to do with that. Some folks I know who are associated with the county are thrilled she canned the ONI director. Apparently, things were a poo poo show within that department. Same for the dude from Development Services. His department has a decade+ long history of being inefficient, impossible to work with and hostile toward women. That stuff about her personal story is disappointing as hell, but other than that dumb mistake + double down I think she's doing pretty well.

It's really dumb, she told an anecdote about how her father died in a car accident on his way back from a rental property he owned that had been damaged by tenants. The part she omitted was that he was apparently intoxicated and caused the accident himself. In the context of the anecdote it wasn't relevant, but apparently some people nutted themselves over doing some Real Journalism.

This is a pretty interesting case, reading the included pdf. The Oregon Supreme Court seems annoyed at the other court rulings since they played word games(they equated 'peaceful resistance' and 'noncooperation', wtf) to come to their own preconceived notions. I think the Oregon Supreme Court interpreted this law correctly, looks good.

I really don't see a reason to replace Eudaly considering the rest of the council is far worse and most it runs unopposed.

It seems like public employee pensions and healthcare are the main targets for cuts to get Oregon's budget in the black. http://www.oregonlive.com/politics/index.ssf/2017/04/oregon_budget_writers_unveil_p.html Not surprising since measure 97 was essentially the showdown between public employees and wealthy corporations to see who would foot the bill, and the corporations threw enough money at the vote to have things go their way. It's still really disappointing to see that betraying agreements made to public employee unions is the acceptable sacrifice to make for a Dem run government.

It's amazing how much people hate PERS. A cool thing to do, imo, would be to allow non-public employees to contribute to it, but that'll never get off the ground. Similarly, Chloe Eudaly wants to make a city of Portland-owned bank, for some reason.

Yeah, speaking as a public employee the uncertainty as to what the hell is happening with my retirement is pretty infuriating. It's also not great that I haven't heard a ton of noise from SEIU trying to get us ruled up about it, just a few emails asking us to write our reps.
