The cases where people mostly make a big deal out of this is when they're in another province but end up faced with an English-only federal function (like customs and whatnot), or in some special cases like Air Canada, which, when it got privatized, kept some of its federal obligations like staying bilingual. I'd tell you in practice I've seen more Quebecois coworkers mad when you have 12 francophones in a meeting and a single anglophone, and everyone in there switches to English instantly. The old 'pur et durs' that really get angry the moment they hear English no matter what context tend to be people from older generations where that was the normal behaviour.

A lot of this I dump on Bergevin and his culture and character bullshit. This. Bergevin is still stuck in Old Time Hockey era and hung up on character poo poo and it shows. Trades away skill players like Andrighetto and loads up on grinders for depth. Not giving players like Hudon and Carr, who actually do make significant contributions to offense, any opportunities but rather giving those roster spots to Dwight King and Steve loving Ott. I'm still pinning all the lovely drafting on Bergevin rather than Timmins.

iospace posted:How long will the FIRE JULIEN chants start from has? Weh, for now we like him. The team plays less like a garbage fire that needs Carey to bail it out most nights. Therrien had the magic bounce when the Habs made it to the ECF that one year, and they played a fast, energetic game that took everyone by surprise, but I don't think Julien is going to lose HAS' support for another year or two. stab posted:words You listed Scherbak twice and Hudon is a) probably going to get an extended crack at the NHL next year (unless he's the new Gabe Dumont) and b) probably not less than a 3rd line scoring winger. For *far too long* the Habs have viewed themselves as being deficient in bottom-6 defensively responsible forwards and defensively responsible d-men. A lot of this can be explained away by "the system Michel Therrien used was 'collapse to the net, don't let them get easy shots, Carey will do the rest'" and a little bit of "PK Subban isn't responsible with the Puck! Galchenyuk can't win faceoffs! Plekanec and Markov are getting older!". Basically what I'm saying is, Trevor Timmins doesn't dictate what the team drafts, and based on how speculative the late round pickups have been, I'd be guessing Bergevin basically lets him pick and choose who he wants in the 4th and 5th rounds. Kilza posted:I'm guessing if Bergevin was to get fired Julien Brisebois (Tampa's AGM) would be the popular choice to replace him, which seems like it'd be an improvement. Of course, there's also the comedy option of Patrick Roy. I doubt Roy comes in if there's a coach. Roy comes in if it's a "blow it all up scenario", because he wants to have a large say in what the GM does, while being the coach. I think this coming year is Bergevin's last chance. This just passed year was an "all in year" that got complicated by a month long fall-off and there being no real "targets" for rentals Bergevin might have gone in for. If they're tumbling down the stretch in January again, there's gonna be some real heat on Bergevin, and if they get bounced in the first round (regardless of how absurdly unfair it is that they have to play the team that finished 4th in conference) I really do think he's gone. This time. ThinkTank posted:Randy Cunneyworth was installed on an interim basis about five years ago and he didn't speak French. He was never a full time head coach though. Wasn't Cunneyworth staggeringly unpopular? Doesn't Montreal alone account for 9/100 of those English speakers in Quebec (and most of the bilingual persons too)? (worth noting, a lot of Quebecers in the East, who are definitely monolingual french, of the state will never ever support the Canadiens because they are Nordiques 100%... still) Also, Qubecois Joual is disgusting, and someone should put an end to it.

Suspicious posted:"Pick the best francophone(s) available in the draft" used to be a thing, at least for the first rounds anyway. Now it's "pick the best players available, who cares what language they speak." When he was still really enthusiastic about hockey, I watched the draft every year with my dad. One of my most vivid memories was Bob McKenzie remarking that Montreal was really happy with their first 2 rounds, because they got Brad Brown with their 1st pick but were still able to get a French-Canadian player with their next pick. AT the time I didn't understand why that was important, I just figured every team tried to go for BPA according to their judgement, anyways.. Keep in mind I was 11 at the time. In Montreal's defence, the player in question was Jose Theodore. However, they also picked Brad Brown. He wasn't even the best player named Brown available! Curtis Brown went #43 to Buffalo. OTOH, the bets player my guys drafted was Mike goddamned Peluso.

Killorn's season was basically the same as last year, which is only bad because he wasn't able to do anything with the extra minute and a half per night (because he isn't a first line player).
