You might be able to get someone at Tmo to apply one of the numerous employer-based discounts. I had one when I was a university faculty member that knocked my bill down to something like $37/mo for one no-contract line with 4 or 6GB of data - I think they used a federal government employee discount or something to get it applied. Unfortunately their coverage in my area blows. AT&T also has some undocumented discounts, as does Verizon, but they've gotten stricter about handing them out. To get 30% off my bill with AT&T I had to show a university pay stub, for instance.

But since our pay stubs were just printouts from our payroll website, I really doubt they're going to scrutinize things.

I'm a local government employee so yeah that's worth a try as well. Verizon offered me a discount but tmobile didn't mention anything when I signed up for my last plan.

It's kinda hard to gauge your true data usage with TMobile because they give you free streaming. When I switched to Fi about 6 months ago, you would have to use more than 4 gigs of data before TMobile became a better deal. If you use the other perks that TMobile has, like last year they gave you free MLB TV, cheaper SlingTV service, amongst other discounts, then that might also be an advantage to you.

My phone still reports accurate data usage sent over the cell network. It has no idea what TMobile is counting as free.

Well I think what I meant was that you can go look up your billing history and get a listing of monthly usage, but I don't remember it including all usage. Going by your phone's meter - as I pick up my phone and look at my data meter, when did they start keeping historical data? I always thought you only had a current month view?

It has a significant fisheye effect if something is near the edges of the picture. I think it's intended functionality to allow more people into a group selfie, but she hates it.

You're going to notice that with the Pixel's front camera as well. Only way to offer a semi-wide-angle, really.

It's also true on the 6p. I think it's just a thing phone manufacturers do.

what your wife is whining talking about is a fundamental property of camera lenses called "focal length". according to the first answer on this page the 35mm-equivalent for the 5x is just under 27mm. the iphone 7's front camera has a 35mm equivalent of 32mm, which is "better" in this regard but not by a ton

Woah, that's a good deal for the bill credits, how do I get that added to my plan if I go into a T-Mobile store? Is it some special promo I need to mention?

The other side of this is that Fi with low data usage can be $130 a month with the phones included, but I have to constantly watch data. TMobile would be closer to $150 before the credits but unlimited data is nice. The credits you mention would equal one free pixel though so that would push it over the top.

Have there been any deals on Fi compatible phones lately? I've had my Nexus 6P since fall 2015 when I first signed up for Fi and, earlier today, I finally managed to drop it, cracking the screen. Looks like $350 for a screen replacement or $399 for a new one, but that's hard to swallow for a phone that's coming up on 2 years old. Would rather not switch to another provider because I enjoy $25/mo phone bills more than the $90/mo or whatever I was paying Verizon. Took a look at used 6Ps and Pixels on eBay, but the reasonably-priced auctions seem as shady as you'd expect.

For those of you (like me) who don't normally read the general Android thread, I was skimming it today and saw that there is a class action lawsuit about LG phones. It looks like they started with just looking at LG G4 phones that had the bootloop issue, but now they're broadening it to more models such as the Nexus 5X.

I haven't had the bootloop issue myself, but I'm thinking about contacting the law firm anyway. The first two (new-in-box) phones that Google shipped to me both had flaws, and the third one they sent me was a refurb with a slight case of the orange-tint problem. By that point I was tired of dicking around with the warranty process so I stuck with it, but I've always felt like the whole process was crappy, especially compared to the good luck that I (and people I know) had with the Nexus 4 and 5. I know I'm not the only one who had issue with screen tint and other build quality issues, so maybe if I contact them they'll broaden the lawsuit to include other stuff like that.

I got hit with the bootloop, and Google replaced my 5X at no cost, outside of warranty. Would a CAL be worth pursuing?

Is this the kind of thing you actually need to be worrying about doing something right now? I'm gonna see what they say for people who have one of these phones that hasn't (yet) poo poo itself. I would like there to be options other than "here's another identical phone that's gonna do the same thing, see you in a year". There are enough stories of the Fi monkeys charging people their insurance deductible for a replacement after a bootloop that it's a concern.

It's to the point where there really needs to be a straight up recall and free replacement with an equal or better phone that doesn't have that issue, so it's worth people getting in on it to get it the pressure on whatever company is replacing them.

it's not at that stage of the lawsuit yet. IANAL and all that, but it seems like right now the class-action law firm is still ramping up their claims to try and make it as big a case as possible. this is why i posted about it, because i'm salty over them doing such a poo poo job on a phone that is otherwise nice, and i don't want to get stuck with a brick a couple months from now that might not be honored in the "oops, our bad" out-of-warranty exchanges that some people have been getting

I haven't had that issue, but I've had a few people who have told me that some messages aren't coming through from me correctly. I wasn't ever able to figure out if it was because I'm on Fi, though. And one of those times was when I tried to send my mom the "no take, only throw" dog cartoon, and I'm pretty sure the problem was because the SMS app on my 5X flipped out and didn't process the file correctly.

I've had surprisingly great service since I signed up, no missed texts or calls that I can't blame on just not feeling the phone buzzing. I was in the ER a couple of weeks ago and had no reception, but then the phone switched networks and I had a solid 3 bars.

Between Fi and cutting cable recently, I can't believe that I paid for basically mediocre service for so long.

Yes, I ended up switching back to Cricket a few weeks ago. I was having missing/delayed messages (especially MMS) for months and just got tired of it. I also rationed my data so much it just wasn't worth saving an extra $5 a month to feel like I couldn't use my phone when out and about.

I will really miss the visual voicemail system though. It was really great to have it built in right into the phone app.

I have had some missed call issues where calls don't seem to ring, or I get a voicemail and no missed call notification. However, I experienced this sometimes on my previous carrier as well (T-Mobile), so I really can't say for sure it's a Fi issue for me.

I'm getting 5X #3 (been replaced for bootlooping once already) tomorrow.

I hate how they have me. For me, Fi is perfect. I'm near wifi a ton and a mid level phone that costs less financially works for me. I've also used the international features. I straight up asked this time if I could pay the difference to get an upgrade and they said no. I'm going on a trip soon and after I may just sell the phone and figure out where to go. Yeah, the work arounds are super annoying. Being really stingy with data, I use 100 MB/day, which ends up being $50/month. I wanna get on Total Wireless, but getting my 5x would be a pain. I may jump to Cricket for 8gb at $45/month. It'd be great not having to babysit my data usage.

I do wish they'd give you more control over the network switching. Some apps don't like it and crash when it switches, so if it decides to jump to another network while you're doing something, not only do you lose connection for a minute, but the app shits itself and dies so you have to get back into it.

Something like "no switching while the phone is unplugged and in use" or not ditching a 3.75 bar signal for a 4 bar signal if the current signal is entirely usable, etc. Or just a better way to lock it to one network than the two hours you get from using a dialer code.

Don't blame Fi for developers that don't do their job properly. I'm not saying their isn't room for improvement in the switching because I get full bars with Sprint and LATE data and can't even send a packet pretty often, but it's definitely not Fi's fault if an app can't properly handle a network switch.
