Because I listened to all the free episodes, I'm working my way through the premium ones (currently somewhere around 55, I just let the playlist run) and this is not a thing outside of Felix's weird multifaceted persona. Episode 27, Tomorrow Belongs To Them. EDIT: At least, I thought that was it? Maybe it was the botanical garden one. The Crotch fucked around with this message at 16:54 on May 2, 2017 |

Halloween Jack posted:First of all, bear in mind that a doctor making $200,000 is in the 6th percentile, even assuming their salary is the entire household income and they have no investment or other income. But that's a good question because working class status also concerns things like your working conditions and precarity, and medicine is a profession that's shifting more and more from employer to employed. Think it was in the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens episode and they're talking about not using condom lube. Later they mention desert plants and Felix doubles-down on Dry Boys

theflyingexecutive posted:$200k is rich in like 99.9% of zip codes and fuckoff rich in over half of them. I think the people in that last 0.1% are powerful and wealthy enough to constitute a separate class though. When occupy was in full swing the whole "1%" thing was put under a microscope and there were tons of "well, actually" articles about how there's massive inequality even within that 1% with money (and power) pooled at the top fraction of a percent. I probably just find it difficult to think about class in American society without mapping the UK's class structure onto it, but I do think there are strong parallels. cat doter posted:dividing people into classes isn't very useful anyway Agreed, we need a classless society asap Bryter fucked around with this message at 16:17 on May 2, 2017 |

The use of ableist language is disgusting, and its super disheartening when they just outright ignore fan criticisms on this. It's super telling when all my friends that still listen hates that stuff yet they still do it anyway. It's weird that people who consider themselves socialists would completely alienate people who would benefit from socialism, and it makes you wonder if they would ever advocate for the rights of disabled people in their organizing.

I've been uncomfortable with their use of retard for a while now but I agree with them more than I disagree so I'm not letting that be a big issue I mean I used to say retarded constantly, when I was a lot younger, but as I grew up I kept dropping more and more offensive terms out of my speech, it just seemed like a normal part of growing up and maturing, retarded to me at least is similar to slurs like human being or friend of the family and I just kinda stopped using it to refer to idiots so when they say it, it just kinda comes off a bit immature? we all filter our language in day to day life, whether or not you wanna chalk that up to PC culture or whatever I'm not really interested in that argument, it's an entirely personal and internal conflict in my mind, if you know someone finds what you're saying offensive and you continue to do it, that's a decision that you've made, and in my experience the more I matured the less comfortable I got with the idea of leaning on terms people find offensive, there are better ways to communicate those ideas without punching down a lot of the poo poo people cook up about chapo guys like being misogynists or whatever (I mostly wonder if those people have even listened to it) but imo their use of retard is a legit criticism, but they seem more conscious of it these days so maybe they understand the criticisms

i ain't gonna be using slurs anytime soon, that's just not my thing, and before nov. 8th i would have tut-tutted at the dry boys for some of the poo poo they say, but now in donald trump's america i really can't give a poo poo anymore anytime they do say "retard" or whatever it does kill the joke dead for me, so that does suck

I think in general it's a punching up vs down thing, punching down is often easier but less satisfying comedically and iffy morally, I find my socialist ideals are pretty in line with my sense of humour, I just want the rich to eat it (and be eaten. by me.)

It's all stuff like that where the concerns/complaints are legitimate but they're not gonna stop me from listening. Fortunately there are other sources of leftist discussion so you don't have to get angry at them for being three white guys with an amazingly white podcast name forever. I do wish they'd change the name, but I'm not pushing real hard on that e: cat doter posted:I think in general it's a punching up vs down thing, punching down is often easier but less satisfying comedically and iffy morally, I find my socialist ideals are pretty in line with my sense of humour, I just want the rich to eat it (and be eaten. by me.)

Bryter posted:So then a doctor earning $200,000 a year is upper class? That seems weird to me, I think of the Vanderbilts or Kennedys or some other insanely wealthy and powerful clan of creeps when I think of an American upper class, not well paid professionals. Doctors in America earn more money and have a lower standard of care than almost anywhere else in the world. In this country, with the way our health system works, if you're a doctor you probably are just a wealthy creep.
