seriously, what's with all the bad analysis in this thread?

it's like y'all have never read about a class struggle, or like the means of production or something

I just meant that in today's world of extreme economic disparity, the class divides are less useful from a purely rhetorical shorthand point, not that they don't exist or whatever

what our labour is and isn't worth and stuff is obviously causing a lot of confusion itt, which is basically what I was talking about

The ruling class of our society is made up entirely of people who profit from the labor of other people. Thus, they have class interests diametrically opposed to those of most people in this world. Understanding this is vital to any kind of analysis that can be used as the basis for effective political action. Bullshit petty bourgeois people who make lots of money and other varieties of sycophants may have sympathies aligned with the ruling class, but it has always been the cause that the haute bourgeois is the single and greatest enemy of human welfare. It is because they control the vast majority of the world's wealth and the means of production.

Y'all cultural appropriation is just commodification with an extra topping of colonialism. It is not useful and continually sends our anger at workers: artists, instead of the owners who make money off of their work.

Cultural appropriation is very useless as a theory both in terms of what insight it sheds (none) and what corrective steps it recommends (attack other workers)

I get that and I don't think what I said (well, what I meant) is incompatible with that, I just mean that effectively we have the ruling class and everyone else, and to what degree everyone else is hosed depends on the level of economic disparity, and it's such a complex thing that distinctions like "lower middle class" vs "working class" at least in conversations like these, aren't very useful

yeah I'd agree, cultural appropriation as like a political idea tries to distance itself from the root cause, which is, as always, class

the fact they have poor representation

It's not like there was a casting call and auditions for the role of Host of Chapo Trap House. Felix, Matt, and Will were on an episode of Street Fight together and realized they had good chemistry. Brendan volunteered to be their producer, and Amber was their friend who let them record at her apartment. Complaining about the representation on Chapo is basically complaining that Will personally doesn't have enough black friends.

I tried listening to it because I'm a podcast fiend but I generally was put off by how audibly unlistenable it was (skits in podcasts that aren't broken up are very hard for someone with auditory processing problems) as well as not being into the ironybro levels. I've had so many tangoes with leftist men who refuse to negotiate or interrogate larger social justice concepts outside of class issues and consistently hang onto leftover Something Awful-isms about how caring about stuff is for loser feminists like me.

You can try the Wide Left podcast maybe? The hosts definitely identify as leftist, and while I don't always agree on their takes (they think Hillary would have moved left as a President, which to put it mildly is generous as gently caress), they approach it from a super logical/debate nerd/stats heavy perspective. Definitely not irony bro, and very very different than Chapo, but might still scratch that podcast itch for you. They also spent a brief portion of last week's show on Bernie's struggles to convey his message beyond purely economic matters, so it seems up your alley.

Yeah the new street fight ep is about multilevel marketing, modern-day snake oil salesmen, payday loans/public banks, and quitting your job in spectacular fashion.

It's actual American working class leftism, warts and all. There's very little inaccessible grad school jargon, just two real dirtbags struggling to get by and talking about burning it all down on the radio.

Chapo is still young, but it isn't brand-new or tiny. I've been listening since May last year, I'm aware of how it started, but they're large enough to be actively seeking more people to speak with that aren't white dudes. The episodes on Mexican students being disappeared and Nike feminism are both fantastic and I would love for them to do more stuff like that. I'm not saying for a second that "recent episodes are poo poo because they don't have black women replacing Will and Felix" but they're going through growing pains transitioning from a trio of dudes using youtube to record their opinions to one of the largest podcasts in the world.

Re: what would it look like if I was pushing for them to change their name. I was really just noting that I wish it was different, as someone asked what criticisms people had. It's not really material so I put it in spoilers. I promise if I cared enough to do anything it would probably be to send felix dms of my feet with a note that says "change your podcast name to get more."

They are pretty drat far from "largest podcast in the world" and are miles away from either most popular political or most popular comedy podcast.
