Yes, that, but unironically.

Anyone have recs for Portuguese language metal with clean vocals? Trad/heavy/gothic stuff, I guess. I know the black/death/speed/thrash stuff well, but I don't know uch heavy metal aside from the SP metal compilations, which are cool.

For real, this album is in my top 5, of all time - no exaggeration or hyperbole. This is like the album of the decade, poo poo of the last 2 decades even, I can't get enough, every single song is a loving masterpiece - I can't even pick a favourite.

It is a love letter to Bathory, Moonsorrow and latter day Immortal to be sure, but I think it has enough of its own spin that it's not just simply derivative but perfects the style.

Knorth posted:

Heck yes it's real good too. I can't think of many other bands that can make me as purely happy as Ayreon's ridiculously bombastic music. I think my only complaint about The Source so far is that it kinda frontloads it's Big songs, it seems to be treating the entirety of 01011001 as it's big finale which is pretty great.

I would agree that it's frontloaded and maybe drags a bit towards the end/second disc. Still a great album though.

Knorth posted:

I'd say he's pretty much wrung out everything he can out of this story at this point so I'm really curious what the next project will be in a few years

There are still a few gaps in the timeline that I can easily see him filling at some point. I do think he'll keep doing side-projects though, like Guilt Machine and Gentle Storm.

Yeah, it's not much of a complaint really but I can't say I wasn't a little disappointed when I saw that the last track wasn't freaking 15 minutes or something. That feeling completely disappeared when I realised that the finale just straight-up leads into Age of Shadows though lol! If the songs on 2nd disc weren't pretty great by themselves I don't think it'd work imo but they are and it's hilarious

Ha, no. It's not like the "timeline" being completed is really a thing here, but Knorth posited that Arjen has "pretty much wrung out everything he can out of this story at this point." That's not an incorrect opinion per se, it's just that that is Arjen Lucassen we're talking about and if he wants to do more Ayreon he's going to find a place to fit a new album. He could always end up doing something like an Ayreon album wherein he personifies the gut bacteria of a rat as it struggles to stave off Toxoplasma gondii, regardless of how "completed" the overarching story is, but if I can see obvious gaps in the current timeline then I don't really have a doubt we'll see more albums.

I look forward to whatever Arjen's next album is. Ayreon or otherwise.

Ghost Bath is alright but oh my god their videos are peak edgelord cringe.

Enslaved's new keyboardist/clean vocalist is from a really weird progressive jazz-rock/metal band called Seven Impale. I can see that sound fitting the more proggy elements of Enslaved, but I wonder how much influence he'll have on the next album or if Herbrand recorded with them before he left the band.
