here's beijing from this past long weekend, pretty basic tourist stuff but figured i'd add some original content for people because why not

first three are from the forbidden city, including my favorite little turtle dragon guy Bixi, one of the nine sons of the dragon king

next three are out near Cloud Valley, i was in a hotel out there for the long weekend. i had never been out there before, it's supposedly beijing's tech hub area. it was super nice. baidu and lenovo had headquarters out there.

mutianyu great wall hike for the day.

there are some aspects of china that is bad but it is not like universally bad across the board. my biggest complaint about beijing is how many people there are, and out in cloud valley there were very few. forbidden city was madness but we got there kinda early and went straight to the back, still too many people. the great wall we hiked way past the last security guard so there was no one up there.

i was at princeton for a conference in 2014 and it was just non-stop tour busses of chinese people coming, and walking around, trying to get into buildings, asking us to take pictures. i was with a few other people at the conference and i was the only one who lived and worked in china and i asked one of them "do you know how i know this is an ivy league school?" and the guy said "the tour busses of chinese people flocking here to take pictures?" and i was like "ya lol"

late april to september or october is usually fine in beijing and tianjin. you gotta get out by november and then come back sometime around mid april.

i thought it was a really nice day but one of the italian professors i was with kept talking about how bad the pollution was. idk the AQI was like 70, i thought it was a nice day, but these guys all work and live on the adriatic coast so i would imagine beijing is a bit more dirty and polluted than they were used to.

My only time in Beijing was during spring festival one winter, I went up for about a week to see the place, got to be there for the mandarin oriental burning down.

Is it still absolute madness tet-offensive anarchy with the fireworks during spring festival? I was staying not far from zhongnanhai and the forbidden city and stuff in the Hutong area, and there were guys in uniforms outside their offices setting off fireworks all the time.

When I was at the Temple of Heaven my phone's battery was dying, but when I got up on the main central altar of heaven thing my battery stopped saying it was dying and it let me take a bunch more pictures. Chinese magic~

Yeah I feel like a better option would have been to put little upside down bowls or screens on the drains to cap them when not in use

The Daily Mail reminds us that some English teachers in China would rather kill themselves than go back to teaching after some time outside of the country:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4469708/Teacher-22-hanged-Valentine-s-Day.html

quote:

A teacher destined for a promising career as a linguist hanged himself after feeling cut off from society and suffering from depression while teaching English in China.

Oliver Hare, 22, a University College London graduate, was due to return to his teaching post in Shanghai but was found dead at his family's home on Valentine's Day this year.

Oliver was spotted by neighbours hanged at the house in Worthing, West Sussex, just days after returning from a trip to Dubai with his mother.

...

'He knew London life at quite a high level but at the same time I do think that being stuck in a district of Shanghai, four million people living in high-rise buildings, teaching in a school - there didn't seem to have been much support from the British Council.

'He was just with five others [in Shanghai], and they loved him but it was a totally different existence to the one Oliver had known and that would have overwhelmingly contributed to this low mood.

So to anyone thinking about coming to China to teach....don't.

you actually have this completely backwards.

this is the first time i have ever heard of someone going to china, going home, and then killing themselves. if you accept that the annual age-adjusted suicide rate is 13.26 per 100,000 individuals, and considering there have probably been tens of thousands of people i've heard from, met, or read about on the internet that have never killed themselves, i would say working and living in china actually lowers your chance of suicide.

if you want to actually decrease your chances of killing yourself, it seems that moving to china to work is one of the ways you could do it.
