I knew someone at the DMV who was involved with their recalling of the "PUSSY" plate over a decade ago. Yes, they actually let it out, it was owned by a little old cat lady who fought it every step of the way.

FCKGW posted:Also Fresno PD just said it wasn't terrorism so good job on the nothingburger Well, of course it wasn't; the guy is legit insane. Can you blame me for worrying though? The incident was basically out of a right-wing fantasy. Heck, I still wouldn't be surprised if this catches on in right-wing circles and they complain about liberal California police protecting terrorists (never mind that Fresno isn't particularly liberal and the county as a whole is purple) or something.

Yeah, while initially I was really worried, between some national news websites doing articles on it and seeing the shooting mentioned by some alt-right type creeps on social media, it seems like mainstream Republicans didn't seize on the incident. The local interfaith community (which is apparently very strong) pretty much immediately came together to denounce the attack and support the victims' families and such, the police have said it's not terrorism, and so far other than getting a few more local news stories it seems to be going the same way any shooting incident in a city does. While Internet MAGA types will probably keep bringing it up (and I really hope I never have to talk to my relatives about it), it doesn't seem to be getting blamed on Muslims by most people, which is a relief.

There are still a lot of unanswered questions though. The LA Times posted:A sweeping measure that would establish government-run universal healthcare in California cleared its first legislative hurdle Wednesday as scores of supporters crammed into the Capitol to advocate for a single-payer system.

California real estate question. Someone here answered some Prop 8 and Prop 14 questions for me a bit ago but I left out a detail I didn't even think about. House was bought in 2004, we refinanced in 2012 Taxes were low in 2012 but jumped sharply to pre recession values due to Prop 8. I forgot that the house was originally in my wife's parents' names and we did a transfer of ownership during the refinance in 2012, since the ownership changed shouldn't our base tax be at 2012 levels? That is currently not happening and Zillow still shows a sale date of 2004.

# ? Apr 29, 2017 17:35 |

Your county's records should show what the assessed value/last sale date is, I imagine that's what any taxes would be based on. I wouldn't depend on zillow for that sort of thing Disclaimer: while I am a filthy CA property owner I haven't had any reason to look into a refi so I pretty much have no idea what I'm talking about

coronaball posted:If this thing sets off the wave that it should/could, the only safe seats would be McClintock, Nunes, Mccarthy, and Duncan Hunter. Everyone else would at least be in play. Hunter has been challenged before, but he inherited the seat from his dad (who had the same name and some people definitely thought was still in office at first) and enjoys a sort of super-incumbancy that has usually scared people off. San Diego democrats in general and East County dems in particular have a nasty habit of running non-entities and sacrificial lambs in Republican districts and saving all their money and time for more competitive or high profile races within the city limits. It's been a problem for years and I'm not sure they'll get over it any time soon, but it does mean that the "safe seat" designations are deceptive. It's been twenty years since democrats ran serious challengers (with a couple marginal exceptions) for Hunter's seat and the demographics have changed hugely. Hunter is fairly popular with the conservative base and the veterans, but he's also a delusional tea party wingnut who isn't used to having competitive races (his daddy was the bareknuckle campaigner, not him). A strong Democratic challenger with institutional support could take him, or at least make it a race to watch, but that would require someone in the county party to actually acknowledge that there are democrats east of the 125 and I'm not holding my breath on that one.

Yeah, one of the few good things that the AHCA might bring about more support for SB 562, since there's that utter healthcare disaster looming on the horizon. Definitely need to keep pushing for single-payer here, now more than ever. And also vote out every rear end in a top hat who supported the AHCA of course.
