Overwatch sounds stupid

It's very silly and very fun and optimistic in tone. It shoots for "comic book silly aspirational" and for the most part it lives in that space. It's also beautiful, bright, colorful, and happy visually and has a pretty great diversity of characters relatively and generally speaking.

Finally started playing Breath of the Wild.

Good: I didn't understand just how loving massive this game is. I feel like I've traveled miles from the start point but I've only covered a small area of the map and only just begun unlocking powers and stuff.

Bad: There are dogs but there is no pet button.

I played through that 2015 NFS reboot last week and it was ok. The always online thing is funny because everyone just drives around miles apart completely ignoring each other

One of the weird things was when I realised the FMV actors are actually all British + are from good TV shows like Happy Valley and Black Mirror

Prey has a really amazing opening for a few reasons, one of the best being how it grows as you learn more about the events leading up to it. I'm mainly talking about the little tests you do in the beginning, the ones that kind of teach you the controls so Atlas/SHODAN doesn't have to tell you how to jump. Much later, after expanding your abilities, you can see how you were expected to complete each trial and their mounting confusion make a lot more sense. The game doesn't explicitly tell you this, but it's easy to piece together from reading logs and looking at the white boards. Also, the game has some pro-tier white boards with only a few instances of repeated graphics. Lots of custom writing or drawings that make sense in regards to where they are placed.

I also did not get the connection between the Looking Glass technology in the game and the Looking Glass Studios that made the original System Shocks until looking at the wiki to remember if SHODAN or XERXES more appropriate. Neat.

Divinity Original Sin 2 is looking pretty loving cool

Divinity: Original Sin 2’s Game Master Mode replicates Dungeons & Dragons perfectly

So basically you can play it in an online multiplayer mode that lets you pretend it's a Divinity tabletop game? One person is the GM and controls the world and NPCs (and can use pre-made "vignettes" to offer little title cards and encounters) and everyone else plays one character each. And it comes with a bunch of pre-made areas and a level editor so you can make your own.

I never got around to really playing the first Divinity Original Sin but if this mode is even half as robust as it looks I'd be willing to buy the sequel just for that.

Honestly, not quite. The game relies on it's atmosphere and the music backs that up, so it's not *wave through and through. There are some more or less memorable pieces but most of the time it's very subdued. There's a quirk of the music where it'll segue into the battle music if there's an active (not mimicked) enemy around, and it'll also happen if you get close to a hostile turret. The quirk is that even if the turret is broken and unable to hurt you, it'll still cue the battle music every time you walk by. It's a false positive the first time it happens, then a spook tax until you complete break or hack the turret.

Here's some more good pieces from the game:

I have really came around to Horizon, so much I think it might be one of my favourite games of recent years. I just had a great moment where I mounted a Strider (robotic antelope like creature) and sprinted to my destination to climb a Tallboy (a robot brachiosaurus) for the purpose of revealing more of the map. When I jumped off my Strider and set off I heard a noise and turned round to see a wild Sawtooth (a vicious robotic tiger) attack and kill my Strider friend :(

From what I've heard I'm pretty near the end and I only wish I'd paid more attention throughout, this is a fairly special game and an original IP as well, a rarity thesedays.

Is this what plays when you enter the GUTS? That's killer.

I am really liking zero-G sections of the game, even if they are really frustrating. Scratch that, it's probably because they're frustrating that I like them. It's really easy to get completely disoriented, which just amps up the tension if you get attacked. But then you're also really mobile once you get your poo poo together, six degrees of freedom, baby.

You guys are making fun of being able to pause video games but I've reached the point in my life where being able to pause Dark Souls would make me incredibly more likely to play it. :negative:

At least Nioh had pausing.

Harrow

Nioh added pausing? Nice. It didn't have that when I played.

The thing I generally tell people with Dark Souls is that, while you can't pause it, you can quit out at any time and because the game autosaves like every 3 seconds, you're not going to lose progress when you start it back up. Any time I needed to step away for longer than a few seconds, I just quit out to the main menu.

That doesn't help in boss fights, unfortunately.

Dark Souls doesn't have a pause button because it would screw up the online multiplayer too easily. They should allow you to pause if you play in offline mode though.

Watchdogs lets you pause if there isn't another player live in your game at the moment you press it. It's a tell for when you're about to get invaded, but a win for practicality.

Prey's soundtrack owns when it actually plays in the game. A part of me would like some lighter mix of the music to play more often during gameplay.

I have an issue where the music plays a lot and it plays very, very loud. It drowns out the ambient noises and conversations so I had to turn it down.
