Okay, I was excited until the rules were pointed out as well. Can you explain for me how ANY version of this rule system could properly do this setting and do good campaign play? It seems like a glorified board game; little say in character creation, gimmicky cards that handle too many things, and no room for much character growth. I was legitimately interested, so I legitimately want to know why you are excited.

Well, the writers doing the setting are legitimately a dream team of occult horror writers. You can buy the setting separately I think, so that at least looks interesting.

Are you affiliated with the project? This is the sort of non-thinking that marketers like to spew and usually results in poo poo like Cards Against Humanity, except at least Cards Against Humanity is a real product instead of something that will be delayed, then disappear or be forgotten.

What a horrible thread to have a post.
Being a cultist in a Lovecraftian universe is exactly like being a member of an underground social group in any other setting as far as I can tell. I'm willing to be convinced it isn't, though.

Lovecraft fan

I am hyped! Also not a dude, no offense. I'm just a raging fan of Lovecraft 's stories and my favorites were always the weird people, not the monsters. The people always freaked me out way worse than an Old God under the sea. I saw the game and was pretty jazzed; I'd love to play it.

Obviously there's room for multiple RPGs about a particular concept, but personally my "playing a cultist" needs are handled by the fairly simple, elegant Soth.

At least according to the update they posted, the plan is to work on the game a bit more with some backer suggestions and come back with a better KS later. If they stick to that, it'll probably work out. Fingers crossed? :toot:

Huh, wow, I figured they had enough momentum to power through, but hopefully things will be learned on their second outing. Of course, I thought they'd have been learned by the first outing, too...

I'm on the fence on this. The combat system makes some effort to avoid the usual ruts (ie. it's not "every turn I move 3 then roll 3 attack dice against 2 defense dice") and there seems to be some interesting decisions (particularly in skill order and timing).

What I like less is the tick-tock of everyone takes turns moving, then everyone takes turns using a skill. Combined with limited positioning (heroes share big spaces, ranged heroes can hit the next space over, that's it) I feel like there's going to be a low limit on the interesting tactics you can pursue (and perhaps the hero design space as well). Yes, there's some meat on the old "hidden action selection", rock-paper-scissors bone, but I'm not sure if it'll be enough (especially, again, when movement resolves the way it does).

Perhaps more importantly, it seems like the game will snowball pretty hard. While that's also a characteristic of video game MOBA's, I don't know how satisfying that will be in boardgame form, especially when it's unclear how much potential there'll be to come back through out-playing. I feel like the static map and game mode (the team mode is just splitting one person in two), limited hero selection, and limited build options, play will slide into a rut pretty quickly.

But I'm also considering grabbing it. It seems like they put some work in, and it should be at least a passable take on a genre I'm interested in.

I like Tre's stuff, and I'm definitely thinking of backing. He had some issues with earlier Kickstarters, but he still managed to deliver. It's a shame he won't be using an EU partner to help with RotW stuff, which means it might be better for European folks to wait until it fulfills and then buy from Hasslefree.

Hey y'all new kickstarter up for the sequel to Minutes to Midnight. I had the opportunity to play this a while ago while the designer was conducting a bunch of public playtests, and really liked what I saw. Give it a shot if you really like high-interaction worker placement games. There's bluffing, using opponent's action spaces, and really tight blocking while trying to build the bigggest nuclear arsenal in the world.

Hmm, good point about the snowballing. I'll ask about that in the comments. The only thing I can think of is winning gives you money = more cards and levels, and more cards make it take longer to recover from death.

I can see your point on the movement, but I'm not sure how it will work without playing it. I should really check out that gameplay video again. It will really depend on hero selection too.
