honestly i dont think avatar was any worse than a lot of other movies that get passes, its just a more visible target. or was, years ago. now if youre even remembering it its like... what are you doing?

dont get why we dont have the ten thousand sequels already. usually studios are faster on this poo poo but oh look... still no avatar 2. why could that be.

I think it just got the ridicule because of the loving weirdos so enchanted by graphics they painted themselves blue and cry over how Pandora wasn't real, the real life version of Lorax's Onceler shipping, the utterly bizarre thing that exploded and disappear in less than a year.

They purchased the theme park rights because why the gently caress wouldn't the company which bought two of the biggest franchises in the world with pocket change they had lying around purchase the theme park rights to the highest-ever grossing film?

(The true answer is they purchased them probably just to gently caress over Universal, but still.)

It's actually pretty interesting that Disney has the rights because now they have a vested interest in ensuring the franchise's success. Normally, Disney would stick a lower-tier Star Wars or Marvel sequel up against Avatar 2 to harm its opening weekend - a lot of people expected them to position Last Jedi or Han Solo up against Avatar 2 before it was delayed - but instead Disney's playing nice and avoiding its release dates because they want Na'Vi World to be long-term profitable.

Disney's aware of this, and to the extent people are excited, it's because they're more or less completely ignoring the events movie in favor of the visuals. The area at Animal Kingdom is set something like a couple hundred years after the movies so they have an excuse to completely ignore all the characters no one remembers anyway. The rides aren't like at Universal, where you just coincidentally keep running into major characters from the books.

The place has been going through previews for cast members and annual passholders for a week or so and so far the reactions have pretty much been "holy poo poo this is some A+ visual spectacle."

EDIT: Look at this loving place. Even the marquee attraction's queue is ridiculously detailed. I'm one of those very excited people, is what I'm saying.

For a brief moment I thought people were talking about the A:tLA movie and got concerned that Hedrigall was defending it so vehemently. :downs:

Avatar (the cat one) is such an odd movie. It made so much money and so many people saw it, but barely anyone ever talks about or references it to the point I often forget it was even a thing. It had barely any cultural impact outside of a few weirdos painting themselves blue (which I assume petered out pretty quick).

I never saw it because it just didn't sound too interesting. When I caught some glowy plant romance scene on TV a few years later, I thought it looked like something Square Enix could do. Like Tidus and Yuna in the firefly pond, but with FFXIII cinematic graphics.

It's a spot-on analogy, too; like FF10/13, most of Avatar's fame basically came from the "look what we can do with this new technology!" factor... and not, you know, the actual plot of the movie.

Like any time anything is mentioned about Avatar sequels or theme parks these days it leads to a whole bunch of looking around going "But that movie was terrible, ri--right guys?" and looking each other in the eyes to confirm that yes, it is still chic to diss on Avatar
I think it's interesting how Avatar had such an obsessive group of people, at release, who were suicidal because Pandora wasn't real. Are they still around? I'm not really aware of a significant Avatar Fandom (although maybe that'll change when they put out the next five movies or whatever).

I didn't like the movie but I also disliked ever James Cameron movie I've ever seen (inc. Aliens) so I'm maybe not the best judge. I'll probably still go to at least the first sequel, haha

I mean, I liked the film when it came out. I like animated movies because I have a terrible attention span and they're usually fairly short, but Avatar managed to keep my attention despite it being nearly 3 hours long. I just barely remember a thing about it aside from it looking nice. The only character whose name I can remember is the name of the main character, and even then that's just because blue cat lady says it weird.

It's a piece of JUNK!
I think the trend of Avatar naysaying is due to a perceived disconnect between the film's alleged* iconic status and how much pop cultural clout it actually holds today. It's argued by some that even though it made tons of money, it hasn't left a lasting impact -- people don't frequently talk about it, make merchandise about it, or parody it -- and therefore a sequel might not actually do well.
However, I'd say the distance from the first movie may soon become long enough to get some of that "reboot" hype going. It's certainly worked for other sequels...

* Alleged by whom? I'm not entirely sure. The elusive "they", I suppose.
