The next round of legislation has a lot to take care of. Even full single-payer won't completely solve the shitshow that is the provider side of health care in the U.S.

He's a loving knob. Maybe he wasn't at one point, but he's one now.

I get that a lot of people have a soft spot for him, hell, I loved his show growing up. But who do you think wins when he makes his media circuits dignifying climate change deniers with a "debate" or going to the creationist museum for a hyped event and winding up netting them serious loving cash?

I get that the new IFLS trend is to bash on people who don't know better, but shining a spotlight on bad beliefs and lending them credibility by taking them on head-on does a lot more harm than good. It certainly doesn't help people looking to actually learn something, nor does it help people on the fence to be put on the defensive for being morons. They just dig in: it's human nature. Shows like his just reinforce the belief that people who disagree can't be reached on either side, and that's just... beyond harmful.

e. Had he just resurrected his original show's premise and simply taught without any judgment, I think you'd find he'd reach a lot more people who'd otherwise recoil at them smug libruls

People are not stupid. They believe things for reasons. The last way for skeptics to get the attention of bright, curious, intelligent people is to belittle or condescend or to show arrogance toward their beliefs. -Sagan

You'd be surprised at how much more willing people are to accept your reasoning on some things when you treat them like real human beings.

Totally agree. Sagan was great -- he wasn't a blowhard, a la Bill Nye, Tyson, Hitchens, Dawkins et al -- and his delivery was so good. I def had the thought of the climate change episode of Bill Nye's new show of "I'm on board with working towards limiting human contribution to climate change, but even I'm turned off by your yelling/preaching, so I can't imagine what someone who was skeptical would think seeing this".

Yeah, but there's nothing more self defeating than someone who takes the tone many internet athiests take from the outspoken atheists thought leaders. This is also the tone our popular science voices have taken of late.
