Key reasons for dropping the case include the fact that Ecuador were being intransigent in providing assistance and the prosecutors could not justify spending any more resources.

So if you ever want to get away with anything, just hide in a box room in London for seven years and everyone will just give up.

No, it will not meaningfully affect anyone passing down around the median level of wealth. In the worst case "around the median" scenario - where the dead person's property wealth is a few grand above the median for the oldest group - the inheritor would have to take out a tiny mortgage of a few grand to secure the house. Since the cost of servicing that mortgage would be vastly lower than any rent they might realistically be paying pre-inheritance, they're still coming out miles ahead.
Apart from the fact that it would be up to the estate agents to value what they thought their after-100k slice of the pie was "worth" which is very obviously the most abuseable poo poo possible and just one part of why this legislation is indefensibly gash if you have A Clue.

Of course it was false. It didn't make sense on even the most superficial level because most extraordinary renditions don't normally start with a polite request from the Met to pop in and have a word with them.

It's important to note that Assange never disputed the alleged course of events in court, only that they weren't rape.

The court disagreed. Assange v SPA is, as a result, controlling precedent on sexual assault cases.

There is no reason whatsoever for an estate agent to be involved in the transaction if the buyer is the inheritor.

In JaKiri's "around the median" case, where "around" means "slightly above," you'd be talking about a mortgage payment on the order of a few tens of pounds a month that would be trivially serviceable on the state pension or minimum wage alone.

I think anyone who still wants to talk to him now would still be talking to him if he accepted guilt and pulled some weasel "it was a misunderstanding but I'm prepared to accept the verdict" words.

As is, he was convicted by a court, spent five years in solitary, developed untreated health problems, and now might be back on the streets. I don't class that as 'winning' or 'getting away' with anything, it's right out of the Hermann Goering "you can't execute me I'll kill myself" idiot playbook.

Kid's blasting everything in sight with that new-fangled musket.

This morning I wrote my dad (living in Corfu) a long email urging him to either vote by post or by proxy to stop the Tories. His mother has been suffering from dementia for a few years now and while she and my grandpa are fairly well off I imagine they'll still be hurt by the proposed policy. I've also pointed out to him that they'll be taking away free school meals from my daughter, and making it even more difficult for me to ever escape the private rental market.

I'm trying to work up the courage to ask my grandparents themselves to vote Labour after what I assume is a lifetime of Toryhood. They live in East Hampshire where the Tory+UKIP vote is around 70% so there's precious little point, but if I can do anything I will.

I urge everyone in the thread to talk to your families and friends in the next couple of weeks if you can. Any changed opinion is a win, and if those people can be sufficiently enthused to talk to others then the cascade effect might just help to turn the tide.

On the other hand, hope is a lie.

Plenty of policy gets reversed after public backlash but how common is it to force a change in a manifesto? It's right before an election and strong and stable governments don't have public u turns after all. I can see it going the distance to the election.
