I'm on Team Canada for Invictus. Will anyone be in Toronto in September? I'm a bit of an Olympic Tourist and will finish my events halfway through, leaving plenty of time to grab a beer that week.

Speaking of veterans affairs any disability awards paid out between some date in 2006 and this year are subject to increase. If you got a disability award in that time frame you should get a letter to confirm your address and banking information, or you can register a myVAC account and fill out the forms there. Apparently the ombudsman said "lol these awards ain't poo poo, homie" and they are increasing them. Don't bother asking how much more you're getting, it's "too complicated to go into over the phone".

Question for the masses - a piece of bro-knowledge I've heard is that once you've joined some branch of the public service, your base pay can never drop outside of very limited situations (eg, demotion). Because of this, I've heard a couple people pseudo-jokingly say they'll become a postal clerk once they hit x rank and make 60k/year while doing half the work. Anybody know where it lies on a scale of zero to bullshit?

In the CF your pay is primarily based on your rank. You might get some more if you're a specialist (tradesman) or doing more dangerous stuff (paratrooper) or whatever but you're right - the baseline stays the same. As a former infantryman I could've potentially done an occupational transfer to a postal clerk and made pretty close to the same per year (no jump pay) but to sort mail instead of getting rained on and forced to run up sand hills. I'm part of the OPS (OPP civilian) now and we have a similar thing. If I move to a normally lower-paying job my current pay stays the same until my new job catches up. I'm not sure, however, if this only applies to OPP uniform (since their starting rate is fairly low but catches up quickly) or to any other OPS position.

I just realized there was some ambiguity in my question - I didn't mean CT to a mail clerk, but an actual release and getting hired by Canada Post or CSE or some other public service agency.

Oh. I'm sure you could try to negotiate that but in my experience the civilian world doesn't give two shits about what you actually did in the army and you're on just the same playing field as anyone else. Edit: should apologize for not recognizing you as a regular here. Yeah in answer to your question - I highly doubt it. acumen fucked around with this message at 23:35 on May 11, 2017 |

Guest2553 posted:Alright, I'll file that bit of info under the 'myth busted' category. Your friends are sort of correct. If you transition without a break from the CAF to the Federal Public Service (ie. Last day of service: 11 May, first day as a Public Servant: 12 May) your salary will be as closely matched as possible within your new civilian classification. By that I mean: if you were making $60k a year, and started as an AS-01, which has a salary range of $35k to $55k (for example), you would start at the top of the payscale and immediately make $55k/yr because it's the closest match to your previous salary. If your first day as a Public Servant was 13 May instead, you would start at the bottom of the scale as usual.

A lot of us who were infantry don't regret our decision. It was a formative experience, to be sure. Tons of lovely stuff, but the good parts (in most of our estimations) more than make up for it. Just probably don't make a career out of it, is all.

Canada Company is also good for getting a professional type job after time-in. Helmets to Hardhats is good too. Soldier-On is hiring and so are the fitness people, it's fairly easy to get in there if you have a passion for sports.
