Our current games bookcase is:
PF corebook, 5e PHB, corebook and a few supporting books for every oWoD line plus the 20th anniversary corebooks, a few indie titles like The Valley of Eternity, corebooks of every Greg Stolze game except Better Angels, haven't been able to find a copy going cheap in the UK.

Boardgames shelf is Smallworld, the Discworld rpg, Dead of Winter, and a Warhammer 40k board game of some description.

Cards shelf is Netrunner, vast swathes of MtG, and Vampire: the Eternal Struggle.

Are we the bad nerds? Also any board game recommendations would be rad, we're trying to expand that shelf a bit.

Well, what sort of board games do you like/what sort of themes do you go for/how complex do you want the game/how long or short should it be? The board game thread is good for recommendations. Ignore Rutibex.

EDIT: Also I'm mostly a boardgamer but my RPG collection is:

FFG SW (Don't really like it anymore)
Rogue Trader (See above)
Night Witches
The Warren
Unknown Armies (2e and 3e)

It is literally a reskinned Cosmic Encounters.

Perception shapes Reality, and in games the way something is worded shapes play and perception. Thus, names for things are important, and more often than not help focus something, which is why the base attribute line is so decried lately. It doesn´t tell one anything new about the character, only perceivable, but rather unimportant statistical data.

But how would perception change if we renamed the base attributes? Would the problem persist or would it add both flavor and add to, albeit differently, the mechanical expression?

Example:
Strength -> Brutality
Dexterity -> Grace
Intelligence -> Slyness
Willpower -> Ruthlessness

Or is such a reskin entirely pointless and more of a personal flavour than anything?

The naming of stats does influence the players' assumptions about how the PCs actually do things, especially in more narrative games. For example, The Rock of Tahamaat, where one player is the bold, decisive, energetic and ruthless tyrant, and the other players are the craven, desperate, unlucky, and vicious subjects rebelling against him.

I'm getting a gaming group back together that hasn't played together since we finished a campaign a couple years ago, this time playing Strike instead of Dungeon World. I somehow forgot about that one guy's complete inability to take anything even vaguely seriously. I'm not even going for that serious of a tone here--it's Spelljammer meets Treasure Planet, it's gonna be a bit crazy--and he still finds a way to go over the top.

Everyone else's character concept: a descendant of the heroic bloodline of her previous character, but turned to anti-heroism, captaining a stolen space ship (actually really proud of this player--she'd never roleplayed before our last game, did a great job, and is now putting more thought into her character than anyone else already); a proud warrior from a defeated culture who are basically space Spartans, using a hard light gladius, spear, and shield; an ex-lawman with a plasma rifle and grenade launcher who's fed up with working within the law to kill bad guys; a space-warping magician who somehow ended up in the wrong dimension and fell in with these bounty hunters as she tries to find a way home.

This other guy's concept he comes to me with? He wants to play the Buddies, which is great, but his concept is "a young, naive adventuring boy and the middle-aged man who keeps trying to bang him." That's it. That's his whole concept.

Anyway I already know what to do, hence not posting in the GM advice thread (I basically replied with "dude, everyone else is taking this at least vaguely seriously, think more Guardians of the Galaxy and less Family Guy"), but I just wanted to vent. There's always that one guy.

For reals. Every group I've been in has kicked people who do that kind of stuff out on their ear. You don't need "friends" who are either pedos or pedo adjacent. I'd also make sure his wife/SO knows, because you have to monitor those types around kids, i.e. no contact with kids period.

I didn't--that was for the game we haven't started yet, not the one we already played. Sorry if that was unclear.

I asked him what his concept is and that's what he replied with. I vetoed it right off the bat. His character in the previous game was a fire elementalist who spent the entire time just teleporting and blowing things up, which was fine. He never put all that much effort in, but he wasn't disruptive, so if he wanted to mostly pay attention in combat and mostly do that by using fire on everything he could, sure.

Neopie posted:

Honestly, I would, but he's a friend of mine who's perfectly fine in every other scenario so I wanted to give him another chance to come up with a better concept before I said "y'know, maybe this isn't going to work."

Right now his idea is "basically just Rick and Morty" which is significantly more acceptable, at least.

Wording is important, (see current discussion in the industry thread), but that's not the reason I dislike attributes in D&D. They were designed top down, but then treated like they're all of equal importance.

Also, John Wick is going to want those attribute names back.

Yeah, I'm hoping I can at least steer him into "exactly Rick and Morty" because at least that concept would fit in this setting and wouldn't involve his character trying to gently caress his other (maybe underaged, but he never specified and I never asked) character. This loving guy.

His girlfriend is playing their ship's captain and actually gives a poo poo so I have an ally in keeping him in line, at least.

I liked the mini-rpg with armwrestling and pushups someone posted a while back. It was a very clever idea, like fit-ifying gaming. Nerds furiously exercising and juicing to get ready for their games is just a funny concept.
Is there a way to take the same idea and apply it to online play? Would the honor system be sufficient? If you cheat, it's just your loss (of sick gains).

How would you mix weight and reps to replace dice targets? And how do you adjust target numbers to match your group?
