So this bill does literally nothing to improve healthcare over existing law (in most cases dramatically worsening it), and the only selling point is it cuts taxes on the rich. I see no way for this to survive the Senate, other than suicidal Republicans.

Mick Mulvaney is out there basically saying "I care more about my unborn grandchild than I do about whether living poor kids get food" and you think this is gonna make them break stride? They'll just doggedly stick to the idea that the bill SAVES MONEY and a decent portion of America will buy it or decide the CBO is FAKE NEWS. I think the Senate has difficulty getting 50 votes for this monstrosity, though. Heller, Flake, Collins, Portman, possibly Burr and Murkowski are probably going to balk at the Medicaid cuts.

The CBO did not attempt to determine what states would ask for waivers. quote:As a result, CBO and JCT’s estimates reflect an assessment of the probabilities of different outcomes (without any explicit predictions about which states make which choices) and are, by the agencies’ judgment, in the middle of the distribution of potential outcomes.

The GOP may have been hoping the media would announce "hey, it got a little better, 1 million more people insured!" Instead, the media is blaring 23 million will lose coverage by 2026 in 80-point font.

Realize they had to have the house pass a bill that will raise premiums, cut off insurance for 50+ million and give massive tax breaks to the wealthy, just to have the senate replace the entire bill anew. All those town halls and any blowback they get over this (and there will be tons because healthcare matters to individuals) will be for a loving nothing bill. Alter Ego posted:Mick Mulvaney is out there basically saying "I care more about my unborn grandchild than I do about whether living poor kids get food" and you think this is gonna make them break stride? They'll just doggedly stick to the idea that the bill SAVES MONEY and a decent portion of America will buy it or decide the CBO is FAKE NEWS. You're missing the forest for the trees. It doesn't matter if their base keeps listening to Rush, the fact the CBO scoring is so bad for a pointless bill hurts them with their reluctant and moderate voters. The Republicans have tricked you into seeing incompetence as wisdom by beating expectations. The idea the House bill would fail the CBO reconciliation limit assumes Ryan's team majorly hosed up on their math. Instead, they didn't gently caress up their math, they just made the house pass a pointlessly ghoulish bill to try and appease a right wing that can't be appeased.
