I wonder if fear of American flakiness will make them increase military spending anyway? I mean if I was a certain huge nation that had lots of oil and was located right across from Russia, and depended on my alliances with the US for defense, I'd be thinking about investing more than 1% of my GDP in defense.

At the end of the day the US keeps dumping ridiculous amounts of money into its military, we can hardly blame countries for underspending when we overspend so much. Lowering military spending might actually be the best way to get others that aren't on the Russian border to raise their military spending if you're thinking with incentives other than "make the orange man shut up".

Ostensibly the whole point of getting other nations to meet the 2% target would be to allow the US to spend less on defense and not have to cover for other countries. But that's never going to happen, especially when Trump himself keeps pushing for even more defense spending. What's the point besides alienating allies? that is the point I guess
