Tony Abbott:

"We keep tiptoeing around this subject and the problem is that nearly all of the terrorist incidents are associated with people yelling out ‘Allahu Akbar’ as they kill.

I’m not saying for a second that all Muslims can be lumped into the same basket — of course not, of course not — the overwhelming majority of Muslims right around the world, particularly here in Australia are decent people, but but there is this strain of ‘death to the infidel’ in Islam and that’s why it’s vital that we work with live and let live Muslims to try to ensure that this ‘death to the infidel’ strain is gradually massaged away.”

geez tones, I wonder why people who yell Allahu akbar get classified as terrorists and why people who don't don't. :thunk:

It's true our unis are obsessed by research, but any innovation this leads is almost accidental. The research the unis care about is papers published in prestigious foreign journals, which they see as the path to what they're really striving for: a higher ranking on the various international league tables of universities.

[...]

Our big unis are so obsessed by research that academics' promotion is determined almost solely by how many papers you've had published and how prestigious were the journals you got into. Plus how much in research grants you've brought to the uni's coffers.

Apart from the time they spend thinking of ways to turn the same bit of research into more than one paper, our sandstone academics seem to spend more time applying for research grants than doing research.

I have a lot of sympathy for this criticism of universities, but it seems like reducing funding is going to push them even further in this direction.

I wish they'd just get rid of university rankings altogether. It's obvious which unis are good and which aren't, and the difference between being 500th and 600th in the world is utterly irrelevant.

Matter of fact, I'm salty now.
Actually the irony is that NHMRC grants are also largely based on the amount you publish in journals of a certain calibre, so I'd also be arguing that the current scientific funding model in Australia is actually contributing to what you are seeing here. These "prestigious foreign journals" is a hectic dogwhistle because the NHMRC ~requires~ that research be published in certain journals which may be based overseas.

The NHMRC funds ~10% of the applications they get, so its actually extremely important to make sure that the investigator track record is up to scratch because its a crucial part of the grant application.

I saw an email that stated that they are/have streamlined how the NHMRC apps are handled, but I haven't seen the new system yet so I'm not so sure.

Outrage as police stage “intimidating” raid of Sydney’s Club 77

NSW Police have been slammed on social media after a raid on William Street venue 77 that resulted in zero arrests.

In a post that’s been shared close to 3000 times on Facebook, Club 77 owner Matty Bicket described how 15 police officers and a sniffer dog entered the long-serving club on Saturday night, searching numerous guests and 77’s headline DJ, who was barred from the club and prevented from playing his set. According to Bicket, the police later returned and removed punters they believed to be intoxicated.

“15 police and a sniffer dog arrived at Club 77 last night storming the venue, 0 arrests were made, 0 drugs were found,” Bicket wrote. “Thanks NSW Police.”

“The result of this? A bad taste in my mouth for over the top policing, a loss of income, and a pissed off promoter. I’m running a loving business, I pay tax and I work extremely hard to hold onto what we have here to keep a culture, I don’t deserve to be bullied and treated like a loving criminal. I don’t know any other type of business or industry that gets treated so poorly.”

Club-goers also reported being strip-searched on public transport that night, while other venue managers described the behaviour of police at 77 as “the tip of the iceberg”. Anti-lockouts group Keep Sydney Open say the incident signals the need to have “a very serious conversation about police conduct and their use of taxpayer-funded resources”.

https://twitter.com/Sandrolami/status/868667908863295488

In a comment provided to inthemix, NSW Police denied the use of tasers and said they made 13 drug detections that night in Kings Cross, 9 of which were issued with court attendance notices. They did not specify where in Kings Cross the arrests were made, or the quantity of drugs detected.

But this isn’t the first time police have overzealously targeted Sydney’s clubs. In December an estimated 40 officers raided Kings Cross nightspot Candys Apartment, shutting the club down and issuing it with a 72-hour closure notice. Just one drug arrest was made, with Keep Sydney Open calling the police operation “a complete disgrace”.

“One single drug arrest does not justify the dramatic operation undertaken by police, no matter how it’s explained,” KSO hit back. “There are numerous other ways in which such an operation could have been conducted to avoid alarming patrons or hitting the pockets of hardworking artists and staff.”

It's nice to know that useless raids are still going on. I remember getting turfed out of a clubs in the Cross back in the day :corsair:

Helps with attracting international students which is the main point I think. It's a service export really, so as you suggest it will no doubt push an ever higher focus on rankings. A lot of very good European universities never rank highly because they are adequately publicly funded and don't give a drat.

People need to start suing the police when they try this poo poo.

There is only one occasion when publicly forcing someone to strip is legal - when they are an immediate threat to others and you have very good reason to believe they have weapons secreted about their person.

If police think someone has drugs they can compel them to go to the nearest police station with them under certain circumstances. But that's it. No one is ever obliged to make a cop's day easier by publicly humiliating themselves by stripping for a power hungry little Hitler.
