A Big Ten institution offering distance education catering to adult learners

quote:

When she first decided to enlist, Starnes intended to go to the Air Force or the Navy — “like my pawpaw,” as she put it. First, though, she would need to pass the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, better known as the ASVAB, which is required of all enlistees.

“I couldn’t pass it to save my life,” Starnes admitted. The Navy recruiter didn’t seem especially interested in helping her improve, she added, but then she met an Army recruiter who made a real effort to help her, walking her through practice tests until he was confident that she could pass. The military has a “three strikes” policy when it comes to the ASVAB, so the final attempt could have meant delaying her military career for months if she didn’t pass. Fortunately, she scored a 31. “I just barely made it.”

Yo, don't sneak phallic object into countries where you have your soldiers sneaking phallic objects into its citizens.

quote:

South Korean President Moon Jae-in has ordered a probe after his Defence Ministry failed to inform him that four more launchers for the controversial U.S. THAAD anti-missile system had been brought into the country, his spokesman said on Tuesday.

The Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system battery was initially deployed in March in the southeastern region of Seongju with just two of its maximum load of six launchers to counter a growing North Korean missile threat.

During his successful campaign for the May 9 presidential election, Moon called for a parliamentary review of the system, the deployment of which infuriated China, North Korea's lone major ally.

"President Moon said it was very shocking" to hear the four additional launchers had been installed without being reported to the new government or to the public, presidential spokesman Yoon Young-chan told a media briefing.

:thejoke:

Of course Saudi Arabia isn't a democracy. But accusing Iran of subverting democracy while standing in and praising one of the more authoritarian countries in the world is the height of absurdity, and the administration should be called out for it.

Or in other words, "can you tell us how Saudi Arabia is committed to democracy" is a more polite and subtle way of saying "jesus christ how can you peddle this rank hypocrisy and expect us to take it seriously?"

e: And the guy giving the State Department response absolutely bungled it, hence humor of the situation.

I was at SIUC for that it was crazy, a tree crushed my neighbors car, another one mashed a house near us, and power was out in the region for days. It was like right around graduation so there were a bunch of blackout parties and some light looting. Holy poo poo, that sound terrifying. Did you guys make it out of that ok? I was thankfully living in a large brick house on W College at the time so it was not as much of white knuckle of an experience as I assume you had.

Yeah, DeSoto is a small town about 10 minutes north of Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, a lot of students who have cars just get a cheaper place up there since it's not a bad commute at all. Back in 2009 there was an "inland hurricane" much like the Moscow video that hit the region right around graduation and it got crazy. Of course Southern Illinois is not as built up as Moscow so the damage was not as severe.

I assume illiteracy is a factor. I'm not joking. I had a similarly high score with no prep, and I had a Colombian guy in my basic training flight who literally could not read or write English. He could speak it well enough, and eventually guessed his way to success on the one multiple choice test we took. And even he, presumably, scored above the 31st percentile on the ASVAB.

Good to know that the Army maintained its existing standards for its first female infantry soldier.

My brother had to re-test because he blew off he asvab in high school (me too). He's a functional idiot and collected a mid-20s score the first time around, studied for a few weeks to score a 39 or so, not over 40 though, I'd remember that. This was during the boom in 2002 when they'd take anything with a pulse for the Iraq build up. He could have gotten a waiver and done something really dumb, but his re-test got him into commo, where he still did all the dumb guy work.

I smoked a huge goddamn joint on my way (30 minute drive) to MEPS in my old beat to gently caress diesel pickup and walked out first in my group with an 80.
