as someone not super familiar with U.K. politics, 1) if the Tories receive more votes by a slim margin, is it possible they lose seats relative to now but maintain a majority? or does Labour need to win more votes to make any gains? 2) how likely is that scenario i.e. that Labour pick up seats but fall short of a majority?

However, the absence of any real third party makes that all up in the air as there was the Lib Dems in 2010 and UKIP in 2015 to split votes. It's entirely possible that Labour increase their share of the vote but lose seats (as they did in 2015).
