Always felt that the resources would be better spent ensuring more sustainable future development. Learning from our mistakes is important but I see no point in holding two or three massively endangered creatures in captivity obsessing over getting them to breed. This is where you generally start looking at the ecological importance of bamboo forests, and giant pandas' role in maintaining them. See also, sea turtles - if they go, then a whole bunch of important fish are going to lose their breeding grounds in sea-grass fields.

Pandas are fluffy and cute and iconic, and as such are walking weapons in the Chinese cultural arsenal. People were going crazy for the two at Edinburgh Zoo last week and I didn't get it at all. It's a money spinner.

And yes, this includes things such as brushtail possum hats and cane toad wallets. Most of the successful removal campaigns of invasive species are characterized by their ruthlessness. I encourage everyone to look up Judas goats on Galapagos, and elite New Zealand-trained reindeer hunters (yeah really) followed by 300 loving tons of airdropped rat poison (again, yeah really) on South Georgia Island as two great conservation success stories that saved critically endangered species and ecosystems. e: compare and contrast that with the experience on some Hebrides islands where loving idiots introduced hedgehogs that ended up eating all the sea bird eggs, where due to sentimental idiots throwing a fit over the poor poor hedgehogs a thousand quid have to be spent per hedgehog to humanely capture and relocate the fuckers to Scotland where they will most likely be outcompeted into starvation by local hedgehogs and/or murdered by other wildlife anyway. suck my woke dick fucked around with this message at 11:53 on Jun 2, 2017 |

Always felt that the resources would be better spent ensuring more sustainable future development. Learning from our mistakes is important but I see no point in holding two or three massively endangered creatures in captivity obsessing over getting them to breed. I'm not going to do the full post because I'm packing to leave this rainy and/or overly sunny and hot island for two weeks, but essentially 1) I basically agree with you. So do conservationists who care mainly about ecosystems. Conservationists (or, as I would say, """conservationists""") who care mainly about the inherent moral value of each species or life (but in practice operate on an implied corollary of "except the ugly and/or tiny ones") don't. 2) However, there is a pretty well-established relationship between ecosystem functioning and diversity in general, and size of your species and contribution to ecosystem functioning specifically. Essentially, more (established, well-adapted, so often not the case for invasives) species means better functioning, though the curve flattens out as you get more and more species (ie there is some level of redundancy with many functions having multiple species that could perform them) and larger species contribute more to functioning than smaller ones (basically because there are fewer species at the higher levels of the food chain, so there's less redundancy). So while specific mid size to small species going extinct might not be bad, good conservation practice would still end up having to save a large proportion of species at least. So for pandas, the single species of big fat panda going extinct would probably be worse for bamboo forests than a single species of bug going extinct, but if you drove all e.g. dead bamboo decomposing bugs extinct that would be just as bad if not worse than pandas going extinct. Of course, reality is complicated, and bamboo forest are a weird-rear end early succession habitat as far as I can see, so really the actual conservation goal should be to protect large tracts of forest some of which burns down every two hundred years or so and gets replaced for 50-100 years by bamboo forest which is then overgrown by trees again before burning down again etc., which would be natural conditions where pandas evolved to do their thing. Letting all forests go to poo poo and keeping a token tract of bamboo forest that's managed to stay bamboo forest forever is much worse for anything except panda diplomacy and people paying money to look at the results of panda diplomacy in the local zoo. suck my woke dick fucked around with this message at 12:13 on Jun 2, 2017 |

i had to look up when the labour leadership elections took place and it reminded me how badly Corbyn destroyed the other contenders haha, then they tried to knife him again when the tories were weak and he just got more votes lmao e: I'm now just reliving via wikipedia how loving badly labour bungled the last 2 years.
