8th looks really good from everything we've seen so far. Not perfect, but a massive improvement over what we had.

I just played a 2k game today that basically required zero rulebook references and only lost time to rules because we didn't have everything printed out and there were a lot of new stats we don't have down yet.

This was in what was basically pre Internet times so it was a little different obviously. I get that, it just seems like GW stores are in this weird place where they simultaneously have to represent the Games Workshop brand and yet also act as a local game store. I've had multiple conversations with multiple managers over the years, and every one of them has the same line; GW stores are priced the way they are because the ancillary support stuff (tables, painting lessons, etc) are all free. And while I understand that argument, GW seems to go out of their way to screw their own stores. They force them to wait when other stores can sell pre-orders early, they don't carry product that people want (like Forge World), they can't put anything on sale, and they don't get any credit if someone makes a purchase online and has it delivered to the local store. And on top of that the quality of the actual services is reduced considerably from what it used to be, with less gaming space and customer interaction. I couldn't get a demo game in today because the single guy running the store was swamped with dealing with pre-orders. That's fine but it's a lovely model that doesn't make me want to be there. The Bowie guy is super professional and very easy to get along, so I don't mind spending the money to support the store, but a big part of that is due to the lack of options elsewhere. Most of my friends are closer to Bowie than LGS in Southern MD (High Tide Games) and I mostly play 40K anyway so the other options at the LGS aren't that compelling. If I was closer to a place like Games & Stuff in Glen Burnie (probably the best gaming store in MD) I would be far less likely to visit GW, but it's an hour in any direction so screw it.

The GW stores are honestly more like an advertisement than a real retail store. Not being allowed to discount stuff that doesn't sell to make room for more products that do has to be pretty rough when what you are required to stock is set by corporate rather than the purchasing habits of your regulars.

Exactly. It's the worst of both worlds. You expect your managers to treat their stores like independent entities who develop their own communities, and yet you also treat them like extensions of the brand. Hell the GW store didn't even take my pre-order; they did it through the website and then I purchased it. It's idiotic that I couldn't do that from my own home and then pay when the order is in.

What do people think of scout sentinels now? 52 points for heavy flamer sentinels seem like a thing. Fast enough to get in turn 1 heavy flamer range with their scout move and advance, and can definitely take some hits now.

B-B-B-BATTLE REPORT! BATTLE THEME: BATTLE OF IRON BATTLE IRON WARRIORS BATTLE NECRONS FOR SUPREME BATTLE SUPREMACY 2,000 BATTLE POINTS IRON WARRIORS BATTLE FORCE OF BATTLING - Chaos Lord in Terminator Armor - Warpsmith - Chaos Space Marines w/M. Launcher + Plasma gun - Chaos Space Marines w/Heavy Bolter + Meltagun - Cultists - Heldrake w/Baleflamer - Land Raider - Defiler - Vindicator - Terminators NECRONS STUPID BITCHMADE BATTLE FORCE OF rear end BATTLING - Anrakyr - Orikan - 2 squads of warriors - 1 squad of Immortals - 1 squad of Praetorians - 1 Triarch Stalker - 1 squad of Tomb Blades - 1 Ghost Ark - 1 Nightbringer BATTLE DETAILS OF THE BATTLE - Mission: Eternal War - No Mercy (VPs for units destroyed, FB, StW, LB) - Iron Warriors deep strike terminators, put warpsmith + squad in Rhino, go first - whiff on fuckin every single shot on turn 1 what the gently caress - Drill down on the Ghost Arc, that gives buffs to dudes around it - Wipe that poo poo off the table, score FIRST BLOOD - Watch Helbrute rush forward, end up with nothing to charge, get BATTLECLOWNED by Nightbringer - Drop Heldrake behind enemy lines along with Terminators, blow holes in rear of army - Lose Terminators to some bullshit shooting, Anrakyr's assault - Fail every single CP reroll - Use the Defiler and Land Raider to take out the C'Tan - Make huge mistake of charging Tomb Blades with Defiler, Heldrake, CSMs, spend rest of game stuck in poo poo fight where nothing dies - Kill Orikan, lose Heldrake to lots of shooting - Get real mad at the number of shots Tesla weapons put out when their bullshit activates on 5s - lose Cultists to shooting from Necron Warriors - Game ends on 5-5 tie after 5th turn. Heldrake going down cost me linebreaker and the win BATTLE THOUGHTS ON THE BATTLE - Overall a fun game. The new rules are definitely more streamlined--we spent much less time looking poo poo up, and consulted the main rules maybe once, compared to 2-3 times in every game of 7th edition. - The battlefield role on Battlecannons and Demolisher cannons has just changed significantly. Even getting D6 shots from a standstill wasn't strong enough to make it worth shooting Necron infantry. They were much more useful for taking down big targets - Speaking of which, Necrons are fuckin brutal with that Reanimation protocol poo poo. You basically have to pour all your fire into a unit until it's dead, so as to avoid watching half of the fuckers stand back up the following turn. It's almost not worth shooting a unit if you aren't going to wipe them out. It's especially bad on Tomb Blades, which are 2W models now and can pop right back up like some bullshit - Land Raiders are a loving house. That thing put in work for the first time ever. Killed the Ghost Arc, the C'Tan, and the Triarch Stalker - Defiler was also good in the game, though waaaaay less effective in close combat than I expected. Only having 3 attacks with a 4+ to hit is just too lovely to drop major damage, especially if you aren't fighting a bigger target where having D6 damage is good - Quantum Shielding is some buuuullllllshit now - Maybe it was because I was up against Necrons, but combat didn't *feel* any more deadly this time around. I got some good damage in with pistols by combattants--this is easy to forget to do, btw), and managed to pop off Orkian that way. - Game was smoother, faster, still felt like there were a lot of rolls being made with not enough payoff - I suspect Necrons are about to become a horde army, where 3-squad-of-20-warriors-and-3-cryptek lists will be the major jam. Run blobs big enough to get some longevity with Crypteks to boost them. Dealing with these guys is gonna require a lot of heavy bolters and autocannons. e: Heldrakes are rad as gently caress with Baleflamers. They keep hitting poo poo as their BS deteriorates, and the ability to just peace out of a fight and shoot something else is great. They get hit a lot more now, though TheChirurgeon fucked around with this message at 03:45 on Jun 4, 2017 |
