Well, I'm off to bed. I'm hoping there'll be something more useful being reported by the time I wake up.
And in the meantime, let me point out that 6188 people died of suicide in 2015 in the UK, compared to 0 from islamic terrorism. This year's seen a bit of an uptick from islamic terrorism, but it's still way behind suicide.
Basically, you are a far bigger threat to yourself than a few guys in the back of a Ford Transit will ever be.

Hol up its almost like a person can be worried about the rate of suicide and Islamic terrorism at the same time.

Well I mean if you're capable of being like, 0.1% as worried about a thing as you are about another thing, I guess, but I personally don't have that degree of emotional granularity.

That's true, but anyone who does it knows they're essentially committing suicide by police. It's horrific and inexcusable, but calling it cowardly feels almost like a deliberate refusal to try and understand the motivations behind the acts.

Maybe it's just me, like I said it just hits my ear wrong so I end up noticing it. I wouldn't even be surprised if people like Sadiq Khan have pre-prepared statements to go out in circumstances like these.

I suppose; it's more indiscriminate than cowardly. I don't think they would've preferred to have killed police or soldiers rather than random civilians. Still took the easy option though I guess.

Is it me, or has the the word 'cowardly' really been pushed recently to describe these attacks? I remember May and Rudd using it in just about every statement, now Khan. I only noticed because Corbyn always seemed to avoid describing the attacker and focused instead on the response by emergency services/ordinary citizens.

It's a trivial thing, it just sticks out at me because it's not the word I would choose myself.

Been that way for awhile. Don't know why it's come to the fore but there seems to be a very widespread desire to brand terrorists as "cowardly" and like you it's not the first word that would jump to mind for someone willing to kill and die, regardless of why.

e; ^ Yeah but when they do go after the coppers or a soldier, they still call them 'cowardly'.

A lot of these attacks are coming from second-generation immigrants, it looks like. IIRC a big problem with that generation in particular is that they struggle fitting into either their parent's culture or the culture of whatever country they're born into, which is why they tend to gravitate towards extremist groups.

"Murderous prick" seems to fit the bill but yeah fair enough, if you're identifying young men as the most likely culprits you'll want to downplay any sense of heroism, too.

If we could persuade the whole of the press to just report them as indiscriminate murders without all the panic and fanfare I think that would go a long way.

No, it's a natural reaction and its the reaction that they want. The thing to do is to remember that its our response that defines us as a society.

Each time we give up a freedom in the name of security. Every time we stigmatize, criticise and control a community in the name of a false integration. Every time we panic and splash their faces on the front page of our national newspapers, reporting their names and their ideology in porous detail. These are all little victories for terrorism, and change who we are as a people.

Really Corbyn needs to just refuse to stop campaigning and hammer May on this. The sad but true fact is this poo poo is a direct consequence of the kind of politics she represents. He'll be attacked for 'politicising' a disaster but people need to appreciate that this isn't a disaster but a political event that occurs in a context. Both May's foreign policy and her cuts to the police are directly linked to it, and the Conservative government is plainly unable to protect its citizens despite all the 'strong and stable' rhetoric. I hope this becomes obvious to people as election day approaches.

No it won't. They will just call Corybn a IRA sympathiser who is undermining our Police Force's work. People don't look for obvious answer, they look for answers they want to believe in regardless if it's true or not.

I'm a little undecided on this, I would like to see them in court, so we prove our way works, but they will go to prison and probably try to radicalise others. Being shot may be no more than he deserved, but then we create a martyr, and they probably expected to die. Its very hard to know what's for the best.

I am wondering if in keeping with his previous message, refusing to switch off politics in the face of terror attacks might not be workable. I don't know whether it would work, I mean, I think it's entirely the correct thing to do, but I am ambivalent as to whether it would work well.

Pausing for Sunday would be appropriate, but I think starting again Monday at full force is important.

As do we. We might be heading that way, but we are not a third world country. When people commit very simple acts like this, especially if they are home grown, it is incredibly hard to uncover.
