I'm Chinese but I can grow a full beard. The first time my grandmother saw me with a beard, she started crying and said that I looked like a villain from a TV show. She was crying so hard and beating her chest that I swore she was foaming at the mouth. I had never seen her so emotional before, not even when she tried to recount surviving the Japanese occupation of Vietnam during WW2 and watching her family die when France fought the Viet Minh (part of my family were Chinese who settled in Vietnam before escaping due to the wars). I still have my beard and I don't shave it when I see her. Ergo, I am a horrible person. CIGNX fucked around with this message at 08:48 on Jun 4, 2017 |

Cultural forces you won't understaaaaaand.

Now they're telling me that beating my kid a little bit is fine because they love him and if I don't like it I shouldn't get angry. You see, communication is important.

The Monument to the People's Heroes - that vaguely phallic-looking thing in the background of the Goddess of Democracy photo - is the only thing on the square that's completely barricaded off (aside from the area around the flagpole where an honor guard stands watch). It's got big wide steps leading up to it and a large raised landing encircling it, so was clearly designed to be visited up close. I could never figure out why no one was allowed to go near it. Until I read a few histories of 1989 and realized that was where the pro-democracy forces first started gathering on the square.

5000 years of beating your children because you love them. The impetus for all of this is because he was blowing raspberries. Which was apparently rude and needed to be corrected. So they swatted him in the mouth when shouting no didn't work. He's 1. And not that it matters, but it's an important developmental step in language learning and mouth control. But whatever. Rude!

i like how this thread on one hand is certain that all chinese are untermenschen scum with no critical thinking facilities, who are happy to live out their lives of endless toil while taking selfies and practicing TCM because uncle mao told them to but then on the other hand gets up the chinese government for cracking down on the noble glorious chinese people who just wanted democracy in 1989

Tbh you're right because if democracy happens there, we will have to deal with and even larger global phenomena of the Chinese Tourist. Would not bode well

I keep it at Al Borland lengths. If I didn't trim for a couple years I think I could go full ZZ Top, but I'm not sure since I've never let it grow longer than an inch or two. My mustache is also not as thick (similar to Ai Wei Wei's), so keeping my beard trim keeps it from becoming too disproportionate and looking like a neckbeard.
