He'd need to be published in a tabloid before the media would raise the story properly.

Counterpunch does publish some good stuff, and Patrick Cockburn has some of the best work I've ever read about the west's wars in the middle east (and he gets published in the Independent as well).

But yeah, they have a lot of contributers and just because Counterpunch publish it doesn't mean it's accurate, I always make sure I check the credibility of the writer in question.

But their heart is def in the right place.

pilger has been up to some dodgy denialism wrt the former yugoslavia and rwanda

he built his post-Cold War career on his east timor documentary and wound up cheerleading the Australian intervention on it when the Suharto regime crumbled for unrelated reasons, which was actually transparently in the Australian mining and geopolitical-hegemony interest; this at the same time whilst making a lot of really wild accusations about NATO intervention in Bosnia. a lot of leftists readily noticed the ideological tension

Like the Child Catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang who offered cherry pie, cream puffs, ice cream, treacle tart “all free today!” to the children he hoped to ensnare, Corbyn has been offering sweeties galore to the youth of Britain, and all sorts of handouts to everyone else.

As with the Child Catcher his is the most deeply devious of tricks. He knows full well that the country cannot possibly afford such financial largesse without facing economic ruin but still his mouth keeps issuing cheques that none of us, whatever our class or status, can afford to pay.

He will make every single one of us poorer.

By contrast, Theresa May has, sometimes to her cost, pursued a campaign of absolute honesty.

She has been consistently focused and considered in everything she has offered, an approach that serious-minded voters have been quietly applauding throughout her campaign.

She understands Britain faces some of the greatest challenges we have ever confronted in our island history, including the spiralling threat of global terrorism which has and will continue to be brought to our very front doors, and the linked problems of widespread immigration.

Jeremy Corbyn opposes 'shoot to kill' policy

The Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has said in an interview with BBC Political Editor Laura Kuenssberg he is "not happy" with the shoot-to-kill policy in the event of a terror attack in the UK.

Asked if he was prime minister whether he would be happy to order police or military to shoot-to-kill if there was a Paris-style terror attack on Britain's streets Mr Corbyn told the BBC he was "not happy with the shoot-to-kill policy in general" and "the idea you end up with a war on the streets is not a good thing... I think that is quite dangerous and I think can often can be counterproductive".

This video is among the BBC's most watched on the front page for me. I can't watch it, because I don't have flash, but isn't the summary next to it still the version that was ruled to be misleading? By not making clear that he was answering a generic question about a shoot to kill policy, rather than having one during a terrorist attack?

Don't know how much difference can be made. It would be a spectacular return to form for an outright lie by Laura Keunsberg to end up costing Labour a significant amount of support right before the election. And people wonder why journalists misleading people provokes such anger.

Papers are starting to come out with their official endorsements:

So far:

Sunday Times: Conservatives
Guardian: Labour (strongly so)
Economist: Lib Dems (but reluctantly so)
FT: Conservatives (but doesn't like May)

Sunday papers are all Tory except Sunday Mirror which is Labour. The rest of the dailies haven't formally endorsed yet. I'll be interested to see The Times (they don't always endorse the same as Sunday Times), as they've been pretty critical of May recently (although I suspect they'll revert to type and back her anyway).

Far right raises £50,000 to target boats on refugee rescue missions in Med

quote:

Far-right activists are planning a sea campaign this summer to disrupt vessels saving refugees in the Mediterranean, after successfully intercepting a rescue mission last month.

Members of the anti-Islam and anti-immigrant “Identitarian” movement – largely twentysomethings often described as Europe’s answer to the American alt-right – have raised £56,489 in less than three weeks to enable them to target boats run by aid charities helping to rescue refugees.

The money was raised through an anonymous crowdfunding campaign with an initial goal of €50,000 (about £44,000) to pay for ships, travel costs and film equipment. On Saturday the group confirmed they had reached their target but were still accepting donations. A French far-right group hired a boat for a trial run last month, disrupting a search-and-rescue vessel as it left the Sicilian port of Catania. They claimed they had slowed the NGO ship until the Italian coastguard intervened.

Figures from the UN’s migration agency, the IOM, reveal that 1,650 refugees have died crossing the Mediterranean so far this year with a further 6,453 migrants rescued off Libya and 228 bodies pulled from the waters. Humanitarian charities operating in the Mediterranean have helped save the lives of thousands of refugees, with women and children making up almost half of those making the crossing.
