It's a really complex issue, but as a starting point i think it's important to look at existing police forces in the context of their role as the special coercive arm of states build around a capitalist society, and recognise the that model basically isn't applicable to a hypothetical society in which the economic basis of society is socially owned. Any entity existing for the purposes of public order would be absolutely different, from top to bottom for a start any organisation like that would need to be genuinely answerable to society - which the modern police effectively isn't unless compelled to be so by massive public pressure. I'm crawling into bed now because im loving old as heck and need my 7.5 hours, but this is a really interesting subject and hopefully when there aren't 10,000 other major events ongoing we can have a good talk about it in the thread.
