Certainly not, but a great deal of crime is due to factors like poverty, drug policy, immigration policy, foreign policy and any number of other policy frameworks that are part and parcel of a capitalist nation-state. The form crime would take in a society that is sincerely and credibly committed to the ideal of common ownership and mutual aid would be markedly different from what occurs in our currently existing conditions. There's nothing to suggest a hypothetical society which is horizontally self-organised cannot formulate a response to such matters. For an existing example of how that could work I suppose you can look at anti-fascist organisations stepping into the void left by the state's reluctance to confront open fascist organisation.

Oberleutnant posted:

It's a really complex issue, but as a starting point i think it's important to look at existing police forces in the context of their role as the special coercive arm of states build around a capitalist society, and recognise the that model basically isn't applicable to a hypothetical society in which the economic basis of society is socially owned.

Any entity existing for the purposes of public order would be absolutely different, from top to bottom for a start any organisation like that would need to be genuinely answerable to society - which the modern police effectively isn't unless compelled to be so by massive public pressure.

I'm crawling into bed now because im loving old as heck and need my 7.5 hours, but this is a really interesting subject and hopefully when there aren't 10,000 other major events ongoing we can have a good talk about it in the thread.

S'alright lads, I think I just misunderstood the original post that I was replying to, because I agree with basically everything here. I wasn't tying police as a concept in so strongly with police in practice; I totally agree that in a non-capitalist society they'd be markedly different at the least, I simply didn't conceive of it being so radically different that we could reasonably call them "not police", but I totally see where you're both coming from.

Jane Merrick should be noted is always good for a Corbyn attack piece. She's the one responsible for putting out there the "Corbyn is a weird jam man" thing in repeated articles in the Indie, and went after him over his plans to make sure kids have school lunches.

No I have no idea why the Guardian would publish her, but they sure love to.

Big name columnists get stupid money. Everyone else gets paid in exposure.

Also they have the highest number of unpaid internships of any of the nationals, and are in the process of doing their latest round of quarterly wage and staff cuts. They've been bleeding money for a while and it's not stopping any time soon.

But they just paid for a new garden in their building.

Edit: Also as mentioned 100k isn't really much for a columnist with any presence.

Corbyn’s signature jam is understood to be apple and blackcurrant, a classic mix of sweetness and acid tartness, made from fruit grown at his north London plot. Apple and blackcurrant jam needs little help to achieve a perfect, gloopy set, as both fruits are high in pectin. I imagine this allows Corbyn to dial down the sugar, associated with profit and corporatist lobbying, for a more socialist spread.

After seeing the headlines about how May wants to regulate the internet and clicking on those superficial Facebook news links, I realized that I still had no idea what policies are being proposed by the Tories. That's when I found this article from Forbes a few days ago (prior to the most recent London terrorist attack):

http://www.forbes.com/sites/jaymcgregor/2017/05/30/conservative-internet-regulation-plans-are-quietly-terrifying/amp/

What the gently caress? How is this not a bigger news story? Anyone that complains about Corbyn's pro-cop turn needs to remember what the Tories are proposing.

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2017/jun/05/farmers-feeling-increasingly-gloomy-about-future-ahead-of-brexit-says-nfu

quote:

Despite overwhelmingly being in support of leaving the European Union at the Brexit referendum, farmers are increasingly gloomy now that they are staring down the reality of what leaving will entail.

In two years, confidence levels on the outlook for the next three years, as measured by the National Farmers’ Union (NFU), have plummeted to just above zero from a high of 19 points on the positive side, in the wake of the general election being called and Brexit being set.

Farmers were among the staunchest supporters of leaving the EU, despite their dependence on the €3bn (£2.5bn) of subsidies they receive each year. Rural voters opted in large numbers to leave the EU in most of the country, excluding Scotland, Northern Ireland and parts of Wales.

Before the referendum, many farmers told the Guardian they preferred to be outside the EU despite the lack of certainty on future subsidies, because they disliked EU regulations or were confident the UK could compete independently with other countries.

However, since the referendum farmers have also raised concerns that the end of free movement and the single market could be severe blows. Tens of thousands of migrant workers, mostly from former Eastern Europe, are required seasonally for harvesting, and the majority of the UK’s food and farming export trade is with the EU. The loss of the former will raise costs and if farmers are penalised by EU trade tariffs, their exports are likely to suffer markedly.
