If you want to win an election then campaigning in marginals is more useful than campaigning in seats you hold with a 15,000 majority.

The impact of a leader's visit to a seat is pretty negligible to be honest. A few people will notice but not nearly enough. Usually it's just a pain in the rear end for the campaign team.

I mean I may be a filthy communist but I hear there's something to advertising and portraying your product as fun and exciting Vs bland and tasteless. So yeah I think it's better to draw huge, friendly crowds to cheer your speech than a shed full of red faced hand picked sycophants.

A filthy lie, May was very clear that it's far more valuable than public debates or anything else that people might actually see

e2: loving votes, not seats, our electoral system's not perfect but I'm pretty sure the Gower can get by with 1 MP

That applies to on-the-ground campaigning, but the leader is kind of a special case. What they do tends to be broadcast, so when they are giving interviews/speeches/rallies it matters less where they do it and more what they do. It's the difference between the so-called 'air war' and 'ground war'.

So the idea is that people in marginals watch Jeremy do a speech in front of people who agree with him, and they feel compelled to vote for him too. I see.

Not long to go until we find out if that has worked.

Yeah gently caress it, let's show the leader doing a speech in a shed in front of one bored guy. That'll have the same effect.

I mean really, do you not understand why every politician goes out of their way to show they are surrounded by approving crowds at every appearance, even if they aren't? The only difference between Jeremy and everyone else is that he can actually draw a big crowd.

It's not going to win an election though.

Now Corbyn walking into the Tory heartlands to be berated by some tweed wearing, bloated, angry bald man and his WASP wife who thinks that pain was a myth invented by poor people, that'll win the votes.

Plus there's a massive correlation between enthusiasm and turnout, and the party leader doing a speech in front of a huge and rapturous crowd is about the best way to generate enthusiasm there is.

I said votes. I'm under no illusions that the election will be decided on youth turnout and that's a big gamble.

However we were talking about the importance of visuals to politics. And since the last election was decided on Ed Miliband looking like a loving geek who couldn't eat a bacon sandwich, got shouted down by a shampoo saleswoman and stuttered saying "Hell yeah I'm tough enough" to Paxman I don't think that you can underestimate the power of visuals. Looking like you can do the job is a huge part of getting the job, especially amongst the young who need enthusiasm and excitement to get involved.

I reckon Jez will win seats. I'm far more confident that he'll get more votes than Ed Miliband.

But the Tories have absorbed UKIP through Brexit and that's a whore of a mountain to climb since at the last GE that was aprox 50% of the vote.

At least big Jez didn't go anti Brexit like some liberal know nothings were saying he should do. We'd be polling level with the lib dems if he'd done that.

OK but this doesn't support the claim that Milliband has more chance of being PM than Corbyn. Seems to me that whoever gets closer to the finishing line had the better chance. I suppose we'll find out on Friday.
