My parents are gearing up to sell their house. Because of age and various health problems, I've been going over to help them a fair amount. My dad wanted me to get up on a ladder and snip some old wires coming out of the ceiling in the basement that he assured me weren't live. After cutting through one and getting a pop, sparks and lights dimming throughout the house, he says "I could have sworn that wasn't live." He wanted me to get the other one because "that probably tripped whatever breaker they were on" so it was certainly safe. I flat out refused unless he confirmed it was tripped or he shut down power for the whole house. We went to check after he argued with me about it and none of the breakers were tripped. Next time I go over I'll get a picture of the wire cutters with the 1/16" hole burned through the metal.

I've found several instances, on a switched circuit, of the common being switched, not the hot. I don't know if this was due to the fact that the workers that originally installed the wiring in 1900 were clueless about wiring, or if they were just drunk. Regardless, before any electrical maintenance, I always check the circuit with a meter before assuming the box or fixture is cold. We've also got 3 old push button light switches that I've left in the walls (the buttons are made of glass, and they look really cool) that apparently don't switch anything at all. Are they hot? Yeah, probably.

Some even have non-contact sensors built-in so you can scream faster at the person who guaranteed you the breaker was open. Might also come in handy finding the odd live ground.

If I recall, he flipped the breaker that killed the lights to the room and called it good, but the circuit the work was on belonged to an entirely different breaker.
