I can see homeless not voting, but in practice we don't have anything like minorities/poor/youth not voting. Turnout is always 90%+. I was talking to a coworker in the UK about it and she said, "yeah, I suppose you'd just vote rather than get the fine." Which had never really occurred to me: since you know voting is compulsory, and everybody votes, it's just the done thing. The idea of not voting is weird. I imagine for most people it's thought of more as an unavoidable errand than a civic duty, but whatever works. (Also having an elected upper house and preferential voting means that your vote matters way more than in the UK, where the majority of the population is effectively disenfranchised by their local demographics.)

Helps as well that you have to try quite hard to avoid voting.

There is easy postal voting, early voting stations open for weeks beforehand, and lots of physical locations on election day. Last year at the election there were three places within five minutes walk of my house.

I think every democracy should follow a similar system. While you legally have to vote, the fact it's a blind ballot means that you can just put in a blank/invalid ballot if you don't want to so in practical terms its just a way of ensuring as many citizens as possible are given the opportunity to vote if they want to.

You're surrounded by a pack of sad English bulldogs too stubborn to want to move to America where change is at least still possible - what did you expect?

You heard me. If you lot keep whining and lamenting about how Britain is hosed because of Tories and Brexit, then pack up and emigrate to greener pastures. But if you don't want to move out and stay here and keep bawling, then to me you don't have the conviction to want to escape your lovely situation. So shut up.

The other option is en masse migration to Canada and Australia so our respective socialist parties might finally be forced to get a socialist leader. (or recognise that travel and migration is largely the purview of the wealthy and privileged, and that staying in the UK, building a movement and supporting strong unions and community action is more important than feeling sorry for yourself)

If a progressive socialist were in the white house by 2020 would you still say the same thing? Trump's policies, as banal as they are, are reversible. I remember hearing many times on Brexit day that Britain's gently caress-up was irreversible. All it comes down to then, is logic.

Also you'd only need to blame yourself if you decided not to vote on Brexit day or choose not to vote today. If you voted whilst following your conscience and reality decided to poo poo on your desk (as it did for many Sanders supporters on Election day), then you have nothing to apologize for. Blame goes to the idiots who sat things out.

I would say Canada or Australia would be better choices but then I'd realize that Canada's got a housing bubble ready to burst and Australia's going to be burning when China's economy implodes in the near future.

If labor were still competent at being a leftist opposition, then I suppose this wouldn't be as much of a problem if you could channel your righteous anger into the polls. But for some reason it's not, right?

If it helps Australia also has a housing bubble about to burst, even worse than Canada's will.
