Remember that the culmination of the healthcare crisis helped lead to the 2008 Dem blowout. That and the recession of course.

You are way too focused on electoral politics and process. At this point, the GOP aren't just aiming to undo the progress of the Obama administration, they are actively working to leave the country worse off than it was in 2008 (recession notwithstanding). A blowout in 2020 isn't particularly exciting if people are dying and suffering in the meantime and the damage is such that Democrats have to spend the next 4-8 years cleaning up messes, only to potentially have that work undone again.

Outcomes matter far more than elections. If the ACA is repealed and the AHCA becomes law then that is a terrible outcome that leaves us much worse off than we were before. The ACA wasn't nearly good enough, but there's no guarantee (hell, it's not even really all that likely) that something better will come out of a backlash against the AHCA. We could impeach Trump tomorrow and that outcome won't matter even one tenth as much as a repeal of the ACA. This isn't winning, this is us losing hard.

What everyone needs to be doing over the next few days and weeks is contacting their Democratic senators and representatives and demanding some kind of plan forward from here. The Democrats absolutely need to have a response to the loss of the ACA that's more comprehensive and concrete than "we'll make things better if you vote for us."

I still remember watching healthcare in America spin out year after year with people dying on the streets. Even in the deepest point you still had people argue against public healthcare as they were dying. People were dying from not being able to see the doctor let alone get medication that would have costed them $100+ when in anywhere else you could get for $5. You had people turn down ambulances even at the risk of dying so they don't get charged.

Patients and their families would be doing paper work and phoning their insurance companies more than they were taking care of themselves. There were the "Death panels" where the companies would do their best to cut you off if you got too expensive or delayed things enough for you to die or off loaded as much as they could on your relatives. You had people jump from one junk plan to another just to maintain coverage so they wouldn't get denied for pre-existing conditions.

The RED CROSS was operating in the US like it was a third world country or warzone.

ACA isn't perfect but holy poo poo people argue to go back and then some with their mortality staring them in the face just so rich people can con them for couple more percent.

What a unbelievable death cult.

Nobody who voted for Trump thought he was going to replace it with something better for everyone unless they are too stupid to actually be able to breathe. They thought he would gently caress over people they didn't like. The constant attempts to reframe it as good-natured ignorance and 'aw shucks, we didn't know" is just giving them an excuse.

They openly and willingly voted for this. It is 100% their fault. "We got tricked!!" doesn't count until the exact moment they begin marching against him and actively taking action. Feeling bad doesn't matter an iota to the hundreds of thousands of people whose lives they ruined.

Why do people keep insisting they deserve sympathy from the people they're harming, but never expect them to give sympathy to those people?

The worst part is that this isn't an exaggerated appeal to emotion, it's likely to be reality for a large number of people. Look how many people in this thread rely on some aspect of the ACA for their health coverage or who know someone who does. Hell, I know someone who absolutely depends on the Medicaid expansion for care that he can't really do without. He's much worse off than I am in that respect, but I use a marketplace plan and as someone who is self-employed I was completely priced out of any coverage pre-ACA despite being solidly middle income.

Healthcare in the US is hosed and Republican "reform" shouldn't be viewed as anything less than an active attempt to kill people. The fact that some of their idiot constituency is on board means nothing, because the politicians working towards this travesty know what they're doing.

I hope you're right, but the problem is that all Democrats need to be in the boat for this to work. Part of what scares me about an ACA repeal is that it means we get to have the 2008 fight all over again and that doesn't bode well for a quick fix.

Disenfranchising the poor will hurt Democrats more than Republicans. These people are stupid but the real shitbirds are the middle class Republicans whose only complaint with the AHCA is it doesn't kill the poor enough.

Fortunately, the other way to make them irrelevant is to swamp their votes by appealing to the people who didn't vote by offering them good ideas that will help them and not arrogantly reassuring banks that our public campaign promises are lies to conceal a 1%er-friendly private position.
