I'm watching this election with bated breath. The fact that labour shifted back to its roots seemed like an impossible thing since the thatcher days. The fact that the media is kicking and screaming about it is all the better proof that something is going right.

My only hope is when labour loses, it doesn't vindicate the Blairites and third-way people back into power.

Mr President, the physical reality of Prime Minister Corbyn is beyond your range of apprehension. If you'll just put on these PINKOVISION glasses...

Anyone else living in a Lab/Tory marginal bricking it as well tonight? My MP has had Jack Straw, Yvette Cooper, Chuka Umunna and Andy Burnham visit the constituency to canvass or take part in events - surely with massively popular Labour names like this on board, he couldn't possibly lose, right?

Was that not partially because Farage conceded defeat (despite Leave being in possession of a secret poll showing they had a 4 point lead) so the markets rose and his chums could make a quick profit off the markets?

I'm personally hoping the labour left can wrest control over the leader nominating process like they're trying to and put up someone decent and younger to replace Corbyn. I like corbyn but he does have a lot of baggage and is getting on in years, so him stepping down in a year or two for a chosen successor would be ideal.

At the very least, I'd hope that everyone but the hardline labour right has at least recognised that the manifesto presented by the party in this election was popular with lots of people. Like, if you're a centrist careerist, surely you should look at the approval numbers and run on something similar?

He doesn't have a lot of baggage, he has a lot of good things that the right wing can smear him over because people are idiots, and he's had to climb back up from a difficult position after his own party desperately tried to oust him. Look at this drat comeback, the personal popularity, the spontaneous outbursts of energy and hope from people. Imagine if he had time to connect with people and push his agenda over the long term instead of having to rush it out in a few weeks

He does need to do what he set out to do, reforming the party so this surge in leftism can continue and grow, because you don't want the whole movement to be centred around one person, and I really doubt he wants a cult of personality anyway. But any successor will face the same treatment

Corbyns Euroskeptism is historically accurate but I can't see him looking at the terms of a hard Brexit and the obvious damage it'll do to everyone and still take 'the will of the people' forward? There's so many partners on all sides of the negotiation which would welcome any attempt at backing down that I can't see it reaching that point if Labour is open to an alternative.

Sure but I think because he was the person who broke through, as it were, he has become totemic to the press and labour MPs. I think a younger successor who's still left-wing will be less of a lightening rod. Maybe not with the press but at least with a decent amount of Labour MPs. I might just be being naive on that front though.

A hard Brexit is one that involves leaving the single market, which, remember, even the Vote Leave campaign mocked as crazy and silly and self-destructive and said no-one was advocating that. Soft Brexit is some EEA-type arrangement. No-one's proposing that now, it's just different flavours of hard Brexit. I can believe Labour will be marginally less head-bangy then the c Tories, absolutely. But it's a good hard Brexit either way.

This seems like a poor strategy given that the London Stock Exchange was closed at the time, and re-opened after the result had become clear.
