This election makes me feel sad because in America we won't get the chance for Trump/Republicans to randomly decide to hold a special election, where Bernie and the leftist democrats end up clowning the Trumpmeister.

Ok so why don't they fill those seats and sit and spin? Is just flipping the bird and taking the seats out of play their way of implying that the British government is an illegitimate trash fire?

Basically yes, also to take a seat you have to swear fealty to the Sovereign, which, uh, the Irish Nationalists might literally combust out of sheer hatred if they tried to do.

What a lovely chaos to wake up to. Very pleased for jam man, also chuffed that Bristol is aaalll red. My area of Bristol North West finally saw sense from 2015 and hosed the tories by voting Labour who got a 16.2% increase! I'll be cycling in to work this morning with a smile on my face.

Remember that she had that popularity because she had only been prime minster for 9 months. Blair was even more popular at that point in 1998. PMs tend to have exponential decays of popularity.

Trin Tragula posted:

I strongly suggest that anyone who wants to figure out how politics might go after this should go find out as much as you can about Jim Callaghan's Labour government and how politics worked during it.

Let's talk about pairing, for instance. Usually when one side has a clear majority, MPs from opposing sides with similar interests or occupations are "paired" together. Most votes are attended by far fewer than all 650-odd MPs; when an MP on one side has some unavoidable business that prevents them from being present to vote in divisions (insert cynical speculation here about the nature of said business), they have a "pair" on the other side who agrees to also not vote, in order that votes can still happen and not be dependent on who can physically get the most MPs to the House (and yes, there are often good reasons for an MP to have something better to do than voting on 100 individual amendments to the Fisheries (Amendment) Bill).

Now imagine that you have a tiny or non-existent government majority. The temptation to bend, gently caress with, manipulate, and break the pairing system now becomes incredibly strong; a critical vote won by subterfuge is still a critical vote won. There are stories (which after a night of no sleep I can't find again) of whips going so far as to take critically ill MPs out of hospital and wheeling them unconscious on a gurney through the lobby, and then having a vicious argument at the other end as to whether the MP was actually still alive when he went through the lobby.

There is every chance that this could get absolutely vicious as gently caress if the government manages to sort an agreement that gives them an all-attending majority of, say, 5 or less.

In Australia we had a minority government fiveish years ago, with the Labor party relying on the greens and multiple generally conservative leaning independents for government.

It was bizarre and the opposition took up absolutely vicious and destructive tactics to destabilise it, including refusing pairs for serious illness and childbirth, but it did go the term and lots of legislation went through. We weren't negotiating a brexit at the time though so :laffo:
