She didn't almost lose the election, she lost it. Instead of ruling on her own she has to partner up with another party to do anything at all.

It's also notable that the Austrlian MSM revisionist narrative has been that the Gillard government was a failure which it certainly was not, particularly in reference to the GFC. The conservatives have bent as far as to invent "good debt" and "bad debt" since, but they adamantly refuse to learn the lessons of that opposition time because they won afterwards.

Yeah Gillard is hardly flawless but she worked the coalition required and the negotiating around that very well and passed a ton of legislation, including some very big/tricky things.

Boris is not that kind of person.

No, seriously, who the gently caress is going to lead the Tories now? Will Boris actually have the guts to try? Would anyone? How do you lead after this stunning a reversal? After a result that would have been, frankly, better for you as a full loss?

I'm hoping for Phil Hammond: he seems basically sensible, thinks Brexit is an awful idea and I've never seen him actively gloating about hurting poor people.

Heavens knows who the Tories will go for in their current state, though.

Pretty much; as I understand things it's basically a Pyrrhic victory in that, although they still won the most seats, it was at the cost of losing just enough seats to deny them a clear majority to govern (which is what the loving election was supposed to do in the first place: give them a clear majority).

In order to do anything they have to try and form a working coalition with one or more of the other parties. And given that the other parties have their own various reasons for telling them to get hosed, that's likely not going to be easy or even possible.

And yes, it's loving hilarious.

Not close to a Labour win, but May's lost the majority she sought to improve on. Labour's massively increased the number of seats they hold, and the Tories are stuck with a toxic, evil party that also wants the same brexit deal the left wing parties do.

It's complete loving chaos, and it's all her fault.

There are stories (which after a night of no sleep I can't find again) of whips going so far as to take critically ill MPs out of hospital and wheeling them unconscious on a gurney through the lobby, and then having a vicious argument at the other end as to whether the MP was actually still alive when he went through the lobby.

quote:

One crucial vote was lost by Labour backbencher Sir Alfred Broughton who was unable to attend the vote due to ill health.[1] Broughton (professionally a doctor) was mortally ill and died a few days after the vote but was determined to come to Westminster if it meant saving the Government, although his own doctor was strongly opposed. Parliamentary procedure would have allowed his vote to be counted even if he remained within an ambulance at Speaker's Court. However, after a debate over what would happen if Broughton died en route, Callaghan finally decided that he would not risk Broughton's health by asking him to travel, a decision which was to bring down the Government.[2] Broughton died on 2 April 1979.

I'm just so weary of accelerationism that I don't feel good cheering for them being stuck with it. But you're probably right, one term for many is just better political calculus and will end with fewer deaths and less struggle for people overall.

I don't really think it's accelerationism, cos, like, whoever takes power can't achieve what they want in minority.

The sensible thing to do is to put it to the tories, still supposedly the strong and stable party, "OK, show us how strong you are" and then they have to either admit they can't do it, which costs them an election, or they do it on Labour's terms to get the votes through.

Labour wins either way.
