It was hilarious hearing Eric Pickles try to argue that Labour only got such a good showing because of young people and they only got them onside because of tuition fees. Right, so they did well because they attracted voters with policies that appealed to them?

That's always been the argument- he runs up the vote in safe seats but cant win marginals. I'm really not sure there's any basis for it and it's obviously really self serving.

No, it isn't.

Also can people please stop banging on about how hosed May is because she went to the Queen without a formal deal with the DUP? She isn't. She leads the largest party; Labour couldn't get more seats even in coalition with the SNP and Lib Dems. It is therefore her right to form a minority government, and make the deal with the DUP to ensure passage of bills. That's how confidence and supply works.

Remember also that the DUP have to actively oppose May to shut down Tory activity. If they only abstain then the Tories have 318 seats and only need 317 for a majority of the 633 participating.

So I'm confused about what DUP actually wants re:brexit. I assumed they wouldn't want to lose their open border to the EU, but now i'm reading that one of their main demands is that NI doesn't get any kind of separate status, so that it doesn't become de facto part of Ireland after the UK leaves the EU, I guess?

BRAWNY BUTTONS 4 LYFE
The Tories are basically left propping up a woman they openly loathe, because if her government collapses they have to fight another election. Labour would now be able to fight it on the attack, rather than focusing on damage control. Lots of Labour resources got pumped into constituencies which have turned out to be very safe, and there's plenty of very marginal seats to go for now.

the country isn't ridiculous enough at the moment so why not have the tories move to dissolve parliament in the middle of a labour leadership election, turn up the chaos until nothing remains

Most prospective MPs have been up since before polls opened yesterday, and a lot of them have been in front of TV cameras at 4 in the morning answering awkward questions. The high profile ones have been in crisis talks since the exit poll came out.

A large portion of the nascent Tory revolt is quite likely asleep.

yup. for the DUP, terms between NI and GB have to be at least as good as the terms between NI and RoI, so open borders and single market are critical

RoI is always going to be pro-EU for the same reasons all small countries next to big and careless countries are fans of internationalism, drat the austerity

so, tricky business all around

Handpicking a successor doesn't sound like a Corbyn thing anyway. More likely he'd want to continue influencing party culture to the point where they would independently choose and stand behind a leader with left wing values.

idk maybe that's too idealistic even for him?

Right, fair 'nuff. I was just a little surprised at how fast May fell in with the DUP and how she tried to act like this wasn't a huge blow.

Essentially, the DUP want the status quo to be maintained, since it keeps the peace (and keeps them in significant power in NI) and keeps them in the Union. They want to maintain the open Ireland border simply because it's key to the Good Friday agreement actually functioning.

Any kind of hard Brexit confounds that entire setup, and they wouldn't support it.
