Hey guys, sorry I am a stupid American trying to understand everything that is happening so could someone please correct me where I am wrong? - Cameron calls for brexit, it fucks up, Cameron resigns and Theresa May replaces him? - Teresa May smelling blood in the water and also wanting a mandate (basically a reason to say the country supports her since she was never elected), calls for a snap election. - Despite early predictions her party did well but not well enough? Or did her party do poo poo? This is the part I can't quite figure out. Regardless its clear it didn't do as clear as she expected/claimed. Does this mean her mandate dies? Does she resign? Are you guys still continuing with brexit? Sorry for this, I am finding a hard time finding something to sum up what is happening as opposed to what is happening right now.

Just wanna show you guys something https://twitter.com/_geringonca/status/873215708154519555 This graph is voting intentions by the Portuguese people. It starts right after the elections, when the Socialist Party made a parliamentary coalition (not government coalition) with the Left Bloc and the Communists and successfully established a minority government with a majority on some important points. The "Geringonça" line is voting intentions on the left leaning parties. The "Direita" line is voting intentions in the right leaning parties. It works AND Economically we've been doing much, much, much better.

Imagine the House was the only chamber that mattered in the US and could call elections. The Republicans have a small majority and think calling an election will increase it. Instead they lose the majority despite doing better than the Democrats and they can now only get a tiny Majority by relying on some mad fucker Tea Partiers who ran as independents. So not great for them even if technically still a win as trying to get anything through will now be a massive pain in the rear end and require total unity including said mad fucker tea partiers.

Knifegrab posted:Hey guys, sorry I am a stupid American trying to understand everything that is happening so could someone please correct me where I am wrong? May called an election when the polls showed Corbyn was deeply unpopular and an election would result in a massive tory majority, in six weeks she managed to poo poo the bed enough that she lost her majority and Labour gained seats, she is now negotiating with a tiny party of insane Christians cultists to try and form a government, said crazy cult party stands a chance of being literally, actually murdered in the street if Brexit goes ahead because doing so stands a major chance of reigniting the northern irish conflict. It's loving hilarious. ronya posted:that's Lady Rudd to you Hahaha I was thinking "immediately peer all the dead cabinet MPs" but I thought it might be too silly of a proposition.

Based on almost all pre-election expectations they did poorly, although still just well enough to scrape a majority when acting in coalition with DUP. It damages her mandate and the opposition parties will be making this point while May appears to be trying to act like it is business as usual.

As such, they command the loyalty of all the Unionist terrorist groups and a decent number of the DUP are former terrorists, just like Sinn Fein is made up of former Irish Republican Army dudes. so that'd be May literally sympathizing and working with terrorists, for those keeping score at home.

The Tories went from a slim majority to one in which they need to make a deal with a second party to form government. After everyone predicted that Corbyn and the Labour party would be crushed. She's said she won't resign, though that might be untenable and she'll get knifed. Brexit continues. e:fb

All correct, but basically the tories got monstered compared to what everybody expected and predicted. She was supposed to come out of this GE with a comfortably increased majority of the seats in parliament and bury Labour forever. Instead she lost so many seats that she needs to rely on a mad little rump party of fundie protestants to prop her government up, all her MPs hate her and they're going to actually and literally eat her. The tory government survives for now, but they've all got the knives out for May because she hosed them through her own hubris and stupidity.

Theresa may tried to turn it into a popularity contest and tried to make it her (personal) popularity against Jeremy corbyns personal unpopularity. As such she ran an incredibly bad campaign with some incredibly bad policies, refused to do interviews (because she can't answer questions she's not given in advance and is also a coward) and then in addition turned out to be a plastic faced robot who can't deal with talking to people she doesn't know and in addition to this, runs through fields of wheat and fucks up things for the farmers.

She'll make it until the summer break and get knifed when the Tories have worked out who they want to replace her. Knifegrab posted:Hey guys, sorry I am a stupid American trying to understand everything that is happening so could someone please correct me where I am wrong? The two first points are correct. At the time when the election was called, May and her team led by 20-25% in the opinion polls. Then, in an incredible moment of hubris, she decided that she didn't actually have to put in any effort campaigning and could just coast to victory on the strength of a single slogan. The problem with this was that certified unelectable joke person Jeremy Corbyn actually put in the effort and actually tried appealing to people with good and popular policies, and to the complete bafflement of the political class this worked and he closed that 20% gap to 2%. Now the Conservatives have lost their majority, so they're relegated to relying on the support of Northern Irish crazy people to stay in power. May is desperately trying to cling to power, but the rest of her party are sharpening the knives. Brexit is going ahead, but May's orginal plan for the negotiations is deader than dead and she's never getting the kind of deal that will both satisfy her base and the Northern Irish crazies she relies on for her majority. All in all May's hosed super hard.

Shouldn't this be playing on every news channel on a loop until the wheat field running idiot steps down? Yeah..... that's not how the brit media works. Watch and see if any of them call her out on literally forming a government with actual terrorists ( they won't). She said that if she loses 6 seats the tories are hosed. She lost more like a dozen or something (I've lost count) but she hasn't really acknowledged the catastrophic outcome of the election at all in her public statements so far. She's basically going to pretend it never happened.
