I would not be at all surprised if this is all to make it look like May wants to stay on as PM, but she's actually furiously trying to resign.

Hoops posted:I don't think you can do a transitional leader whilst you're in power, and in the middle of negotiations with the EU. I think they have to pick their guy. Which maybe it is David Davis, he's the most high profile guy that isn't either absolutely despised or Boris. Any temporary leader is on such a hiding to nothing that they may as well just keep May for another 6-12 months until some dust has settled. I mean a leader to get them out the other side of the Brexit negotiations with the young guns and ambitious risers stepping back to let a "safe pair of hands" who isn't too immediately repulsive to everyone keep things on course. Probably force a leadership contest or have him resign as soon as it comes to an election post Brexit

Tsaedje posted:The Queen's speech is the list of legislation the government will try to pass in the coming period. She opens Parliament by giving a speech listing it all. There's a bit of debate in the opening days of the parliament, then there's a vote to agree "yes, these are the things we're going to try to do". Failure to pass this vote is seen as a vote of no confidence in the government. Usually the government has enough MPs that this cruises through as a formality, but May needs all her MPs and the DUP just to pass it. It's kind of crazy to me that the House of Lords is an unelected check on conservatism. I would think it would end up being mostly composed of rich autocrats that mostly just want more money.

There are age limits though - the Anthony Nolan Trust prefers under 30s, and the British Bone Marrow registry prefers under 40s. If you are also of minority ethnicity - in UK terms - they really, really need you. I'm not allowed in mainland Europe because I spent the first 6 months of my life in BSE land (don't think I was eating any burgers but hey). Might be a Europe-wide thing? I doubt I can do it in the UK either as a non-resident

I mean that's kind of what May was meant to be as a leader except I think she got a bit confused and started buying into press praise and started thinking she actually was Maggie 2.0

Right now the Tories are in such disarray that the leadership is the ultimate poison chalice. They need someone to be a sacrificial lamb cause whoever takes it on is going to take a hell of a kicking, and probably not make it to the end of next year.

Even more humiliating, when she stands down as leader May will have to stay on as an MP. The Tories won't want to lose a single seat and we all know that in a by-election the momentum in Maidenhead is more and more in the direction of beloved champion of the people Lord Buckethead.
