Me too. I also think there might not be that many people who want to be PM right now after May, your options are a toxic alliance with DUP, or calling an early election when Labour has the wind at their backs.

I don't think you can do a transitional leader whilst you're in power, and in the middle of negotiations with the EU. I think they have to pick their guy. Which maybe it is David Davis, he's the most high profile guy that isn't either absolutely despised or Boris. Any temporary leader is on such a hiding to nothing that they may as well just keep May for another 6-12 months until some dust has settled.

I mean a leader to get them out the other side of the Brexit negotiations with the young guns and ambitious risers stepping back to let a "safe pair of hands" who isn't too immediately repulsive to everyone keep things on course.

Probably force a leadership contest or have him resign as soon as it comes to an election post Brexit

Yep, and the DUP as a party is tied to a lot of the NI Terrorist groups, like the UVF, the UDA and the Ulster Resistance. Talking to terrorists about peace: probably a good thing. Giving them the keys to number 10: you fuckin what mate

The Queen's speech is the list of legislation the government will try to pass in the coming period. She opens Parliament by giving a speech listing it all. There's a bit of debate in the opening days of the parliament, then there's a vote to agree "yes, these are the things we're going to try to do". Failure to pass this vote is seen as a vote of no confidence in the government. Usually the government has enough MPs that this cruises through as a formality, but May needs all her MPs and the DUP just to pass it.

The House of Lords is like the US senate, except it's by appointment, rather than elected. Also there's Bishops in there, for reasons. Their job is to scrutinise legislation in the public interest, modify it and send it back down to the Commons. The Lords is far less partisan than the Commons and has a sizeable chunk of 'crossbenchers' who declare no party allegience. Of those who do represent political parties, there's currently more Labour+Lib Dems than Conservatives. The recent Tory governments have had a hard time convincing the Lords to pass legislation that fucks huge parts of the population, like they'd like to do.

The Conservatives, who have previously been the biggest defenders of an unelected second chamber are now its biggest critics.

By convention, any bill that is in the government's manifesto will be passed by the Lords on the third attempt (after it has been approved by the Commons) and sent to the Queen to sign it into law.

It's kind of crazy to me that the House of Lords is an unelected check on conservatism. I would think it would end up being mostly composed of rich autocrats that mostly just want more money.

Please do this if you can - also donate blood. It's one of the few occasions where you can genuinely swoop in like some sort of caped super-hero, and save someone's life. There are age limits though - the Anthony Nolan Trust prefers under 30s, and the British Bone Marrow registry prefers under 40s. If you are also of minority ethnicity - in UK terms - they really, really need you.

I'm not allowed though. I received several units of someone else's blood, which obviously I'm hugely grateful for, but the risk one of the donors had eaten a dodgy burger at some point is too high. Considering that up until the accident I was a regular blood donor myself...

I'm not allowed in mainland Europe because I spent the first 6 months of my life in BSE land (don't think I was eating any burgers but hey). Might be a Europe-wide thing? I doubt I can do it in the UK either as a non-resident :(

Right now the Tories are in such disarray that the leadership is the ultimate poison chalice. They need someone to be a sacrificial lamb cause whoever takes it on is going to take a hell of a kicking, and probably not make it to the end of next year.

They're political appointees mostly. There are very few actual "Lords". An ex-Labour MP who's put into the Lords isn't going to suddenly become an arch-Thatcherite.

Even more humiliating, when she stands down as leader May will have to stay on as an MP. The Tories won't want to lose a single seat and we all know that in a by-election the momentum in Maidenhead is more and more in the direction of beloved champion of the people Lord Buckethead.
