It's not as easy as that. As soon as they lose the vote on a major piece of legislation they won't have the confidence of Parliament and the coalition will collapse. At that point they have to call an election.

TheBalor posted:Forgive the ignorant American, but isn't it possible they look at the same polls we are and just swallow their pride for the sake of power? Keep this zombie coalition going for years? In a vacuum, yes, you could expect a fairly stable government as a result of knowing the next election is going to murder them and their only hope is to hope Corbyn fucks up severely before that happens However, the Tories are earthshatteringly incompetent morons and the DUP are absolute nutters, and as much as they might try to avoid their fate, they're almost certain to poo poo the bed spectacularly as a result.

So long as he can make a convincing case for it being the Tories' fault that there had to be another vote he should manage to avoid being damaged by it

Also if the Tories try to keep going with a government they know is unpopular and insanely weak at a time when important international negotiations are happening their popularity will plummet. They could face electoral annihilation.

TheBalor posted:So is that automatic when legislation fails? No, but if it's a major piece of legislation (probably something in the manifesto) if the opposition has enough votes to reject it then they'll probably follow that up with a motion of no confidence. The only caveat is that since the Fixed Term Parliaments Act in 2011 nobody's done it - so we're not entirely sure how it will still work. If they lose they do have to resign and call an election though.
