Both gideon and dave are young enough that they could come back even 10 years from now and be young enough to take up front line politics again.

Hopefully they both get hit by buses before then.

This is a really regressive viewpoint. When we talk about the youth vote we're not just talking about students, we're talking about 18-35 year olds. And speaking as a member of that age group, we're not stupid. We understand that election results are more complicated than a football score. When we talk about the youth vote we're talking about a generation of people who have the ability to educate themselves on any subject they choose, who spend their whole lives exposed to countlessalternative viewpoints on social media and who have just as much interest in a better life for themselves and others as anyone else. The internet is changing the way politics works and we're better equipped for knowledge than any generation before us. Yes, this might all go to poo poo if everyone goes back to ignoring us and putting out policies that treat us like poo poo but if someone offers us a chance for something better we're not going to ignore it.

I'm in that bracket too and unfortunately some of us are thick as gently caress or still don't care about politics. There are absolutely people going "he didn't win so that was pointless", the challenge is going to be in re-engaging them or carry enough of this new momentum through to convert new non-voters or turn more existing ones.

For what it's worth I've realised I give more of a poo poo than I ever thought I would, so I've joined the Labour party and I'm going to try and get involved more actively even if it's just badgering my own non-voting paid into getting off their asses at the next polls.

Some people are always going to immediately give up because they didn't get what they wanted, but the fact the government's so shambolic and there's almost certainly going to be another election soon has lead to an awful lot of people, at least around me, going "Who's up for round 2?".

Because the government is likely to actually collapse by then, and the longer they drag it out the more likely they are to lose more seats and support.

Doesn't work like that. They just have to lose a confidence vote or not get a Queens speech passed and that is it triggered.

2/3rd's only is applicable if you are want to call the election without a confidence vote.

Probably only the New Statesman? Though even that swings between liberal and social democratic. Everything beyond that I can think of is Trot.

Nothing mainstream, I don't think. Possibly the Mirror (low-brow tabloid) on social issues maybe? Note that this isn't an indication of how far left the Guardian is, but rather it illustrates the absence of any mainstream left-wing publications.

EvilHawk posted:

It's not as easy as that. As soon as they lose the vote on a major piece of legislation they won't have the confidence of Parliament and the coalition will collapse. At that point they have to call an election.

Would it be possible for an alternative coalition to go to the Queen instead, without having to call an election?

The real winner in Britain’s election is Jeremy Corbyn, who led the Labour Party to a 32-seat gain over its disastrous electoral showing in 2015. Corbyn is a man whose only notable concession to conventional politics has been a necktie. He has done as much to shove the Labour Party to the nasty left as Donald Trump has shoved the Republican Party to the ugly right.

...

Nor would they have succeeded if the party faithful hadn’t forgotten, or never learned, why the warmed-over Marxism or dumbed-down nationalism each championed was so thoroughly discredited. Throw in last year’s Brexit vote and Marine Le Pen’s success in reaching the second round in the French election, and the breadth of civic ignorance becomes even clearer.

...

...Emmanuel Macron may yet provide evidence that, at least in France, there is gravity, energy, excitement and even sexiness at the political center.
