Just caught up with all the news of last few days and I'm genuinely considering getting a British citizenship just so I can vote for Corbyn in the next election. I don't actually think I'm joking. Somebody talk me out of this.

I'm a filthy EU citizen and I've been living here for 10+ years now. Been thinking about it last year as I'd kinda like to be able to participate in voting etc. where I live, but then Brexit happened and I started second-guessing how I feel about Britain. And now I've swung back to thinking Britain might not be a lost cause after all. Is this.. hope?

Seems like the sort of thing that has to happen organically, where an honest, genuine person with heartfelt views who isn't complete dogshit at communicating them is in the right place and the right time. I feel like if you start looking for that effect or constructing it, you're inevitably gonna end up with almost the opposite.

If I were a conservative strategist right now I feel like their best long term approach would be to try to have the DUP deal collapse in a way that's clearly May's fault alone. Labour gets two years of doing Brexit and three years of Brexit consequences, allowing the Tories to completely stomp on any hope of them regaining a reputation for economic competence. In 2022 a new leader - untainted by May's personal failure - leads the party to a huge victory on a platform of "clearing up after Labour's Brexit mess". Of course such a strategy would require a level of willpower and control of their greed that the current lot may simply not possess.

Eh, also wouldn't work - the Tories actually have a majority larger than suggested since Sinn Fein not taking seats means several Tories would have to defect and vote for Corbyn, and Corbyn would have to have unanimous support from all other parties. I mean I suppose if you believe the DUP choose to support Corbyn too, but they won't because those hypocritical fucks refuse to support 'IRA Corbyn'

I vaguely remember some limit like I had to be 2 generations removed at most from a UK citizen if I wanted to apply. well, you can vote for Corbs without UK citizenship, if that's what your concern is. you're thinking of the ancestry visa, which only de facto grants the right to look for work for five years and wrangle that into permanent residency (indefinite leave to remain), and only then onto the citizenship track like everyone else. the relatively liberal acceptance of citizenship double descent was eliminated in 1981 - since then only single descent for citizenship by registration applies (aka, your parents, not your grandparents).
